Need help about Aprilia RS250

Good Afternoon everyone,

i have been eying up a Aprilia RS250 for some time now, at the moment i ride a CBR250R 1989 which i'm planning to sell to help for the Aprilia RS250 well the main question is what are 2 strokes like? i haven't used a 2 stroke before i was told they are really powerful bikes, is there anything i special i need to do?? with 2 strokes - is there any good websites i can learn more about these bikes, (are they thrashable like the cbr250?

the reason for this bike is a change, and I'm not planning to get my full a 250 is good for me, that's all i need... to get where i want to go, work and home .. home and work

hey, as far as the 250 smokers go, Most would agree the aprilia is the pick. you will find it considerably more powerful than your honda, in fact, learn to ride it properly and youll make the cbr look like a piece of shit. rs250's ridden well have been known to give trouble to 600's on the track..

They are extremely different to ride, much more difficult to ride well than your 4 stroke cbr, but when you get it right, its very rewarding. They love to rev, they love being absolutely raped all day long at the rev limiter. they arent made to pootle around town. if you want a bike to ride daily around town, and the odd thrash, DONT get the 2 stroke.

You will find running costs to be more expensive, as you will want to run a good quality 2 stroke oil in the RS, and that will cost you on top of your fuel.

You also need to be aware that the maintenance requirements on the RS are about a hundred times the requirements of the cbr. You will need to rebuild the engine on the stroker every so many thousand kays, this can differ though on how it's treated etc.

Youll also want to warm her up properly every time before you ride it.

In short, running costs are higher. maintenance costs are higher, much more power, but at the upper end, fuckall down low, totally different to ride than the cbr. I suggest you go and do a little more research on these things and understand what maintenance is involved etc before you fork out for one, and mnake sure you are prepared to put up with it. If you can put up with it, and learn to ride it well, you will love it. treat it wrong and dont maintain it, and it will make you fucking hate it

Depends a lot on where your actually going to use it. As a weekend bike it'd be great, but as a commuting bike it'd be pretty much a pain in the arse (I'd still buy one, but I already ride a 2-stroke, so..) .

First thing you need to do is research 2-strokes more, and understand the positives and negitives. Personally I like my 2-stroke and look at all the positives, faster than a 4-stroke of the same size, light (in my case anyway), easy to work on and rebuild. Most would only see the negitives though, don't like running at low RPM (i.e in traffic), engines wear and need rebuilt much more often than a 4, burns additonal oil at approx $25 a litre, not that great on gas, no engine braking, blow smoke (some times a lot), require frequent maintance.

RS250s are pretty high strung too, so as a result get even worse gas usage, oil usage, and need even more maintance.

Yes I'd advise you see if you can have a ride before considering it. How you could be contemplating buying an RS250 without having even ridden a 2 stroke before is beyond me. :P
Personally I wouldn't have a RS250 as my only bike, I'd love one as a second bike though.
That or an RGV250.

- Nope, if you ride it badly it will tell you straight away, it will either stop or GO LIKE A MOTHERFUCKER into a wall.

- Hope you have VERY DEEP pockets. Petrol wise my RG150 (when tuned) cost me more to run than a 300ZX. Roughly I got about 7km / L of premium.......and on top of that it used to also use the oil. So all up about 150km cost me about $20 in old money (with today's petrol pricing this is about 25-30).

but they are soo much fun!!!!

Riding a two stroke is a thrilling thing when the revs start to climb, all the torque and power comes in a big hit. Pretty crap in slow traffic stuff.

Bikes I've owned...
RG150 - Costs $20 to fill up, gets about 180-200 ks before next fill up + oil.
SV1000S - Costs about $20 to fill up, gets about 180-200 ks before next fill up.
GSXR600 - Costs about $21 to fill up, gets about 170-200 ks before next fill up.

I wouldnt have any other 250!

Dont like warming them up or kick starting them though.

If i were buying one id be chucking new pistons and rings in, checking play in bottom end, making sure powervalves are mint and making sure oil injection is sweet. Warm up good and run good oil

It's made for getting it sideways and hitting it in the G-Spot range of 8-11k rpm.

As it's a 2 stroke it loves to rev. Traffic lights, the slow speed, overheating is not good for the engine.

I wouldnt reconmend it for commuting, but if thats what you want to do, go for it.

Just dont ride it at a constant throttle, vary the revs and give it heaps.

I communted 60km daily on an RS250. I never took the main rd, always the back road. Sweet spot in 6th at 107k, just off the pipe. chop down a gear to roll past a car, 2 gears to pick up quicker, down to 3rd gear would see off 167kmh at 11000rpm.

rode it all over the coromandel through summer and winter.

Never gave any trouble - ran platinum plugs, castrol 2T oil, premium gas. savings in tyres, rego and insurance over a litre bike outweighed the running costs.

did 30000kms on it in 2 years and i reckon it was as strong when i sold it as it was when i bought it. only mod i did was repositioning the forward plug (US$50 turned around in 20 days) to the race position and a DB screen.

Here's my comparison:

RS250 - Cambridge > Whitianga. Arrive Whiti highly strung and buzzing but totally satiated with an awesome ride.

TL1000S - Arrive @ Whiti thankful I was still alive after wrestling a wheelstanding headshaking monster, with the sound of twin Yoshis still pounding and crackling in my ears

Hayabusa - arrive @ Whiti drenched in sweat after muscling and scraping my way over the hills riding WAY too fast...........

All great bikes, but I'd ride the RS again any time. I'm looking at a black/yellow one right now actually.......

2s bike is something should never lack in a biker experience.
a modern 600 can be fun, but it has not that sense of subtle madness any oldschool 2s still have.
i'm dreaming of my old futura 125.
i'm crying thinkin back to an rgvG i've ridden sometimes: 70 cv 130 kg.

what to learn? it is FAST. it is LIGHT. it goes where you THINK to go. it simply will not slow down, so learn to use the brakes.

don't try to settle down your mind with the promise of a cbr: you can play weeks with a playstation 3, but you'll never have the same fun you'd have with a commodore 64 and a pacman cassette....

Now you are talking. I think the 600's are kind of similar to 2 strokes in some ways, they do tend to go hyper up the rev range, yet have are fine for work and back.
