The problem is you will have to pay more than the fine if you get caught. You will have to pay all of the registration fee since the vehicle was last registered. So if it's been more than a year since it was registered, if you get caught, you'll have to pay all of that time PLUS the next few months as well - a savings of absolutely zero and an addition of the fine.

It looks like a worthwhile financial risk - but it's not ...

I didn't know that you have to back pay rego, do you have a reference ?

Even if it is correct, its still well worth it. I have already saved $2500. Thats 3 years rego when I do decide to "go legal".

Go here http://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicle/regi...licensing.html scroll down to Licensing – your ongoing responsibility

So if you decide to pay the licence .. then you'll get hit with the $2500 you owe anyway ...

    It's a no-win situation - bastards have us by the balls ...

Yes, I haven't just not paid them, I have either put them on "hold" or moved them to an exempt class.

I looked at that lnk, and could see that with continuous registration, I would liable for back fees if I did not exempt. But I couldn't see how I would be liable for back-fees if caught while unlicensed, only the fine would apply.

So, worst case I would have to pay back rego, on the vehicle I was caught on only, until the time it was last correctly registered.

In a way, I hope they DO move to electronic numberplate rego checking. A human being would quickly notice that my correctly registered TGB moped actually had BMW badges. A camera would just say "rego=OK".

I will also be pragmatic. A couple of months rego over summer will cover much of my really busy riding season, and reset the clock if back-dues become payable.

Strangely, the first few trips I did rego-less I was very aware of it, and super sure I would get caught. Now, it doesn't bother me, although I still choose the longer country road every time over the quick highway. Mind you, I used to choose those roads when fully legal, so its not particularly relevant.

good point, so with the proposed number plate recognition cameras it would be best to swap plates with your other "rego'd" bike rather than ride with an expired rego. Reminds me of when I was a kid & dad would swap the trailer plate onto the caravan etc.
