Was just thinking the same, checking Google maps it is around 3 hours from Wanganui to National park via the river road at a conservative pace.
Enough time to take a slight detour down a certain traverse ( weather permiting )

This ride is definitely big bike friendly The fellas with big testicklies and small bikes have an option of the Whanga Rd and time permitting a loop out back of Waverley.
Us big bike boys (with littler testies ) will watch from our nice clean bikes
Having said that I have done both the Whanga and the loop on the GS but (always a but) it was drier at the time I did it and allegedly I may have required help to regain vertical status at Waverley, (although I managed by my self out Whanga )

Unless your planning to have a go at the Whanga or the loop a set of dual sports and a smile will get you everywhere else.
    SEE YA ON THE RIDE
