    It pays to shop around

I thought I would bring to your attention my experience with bike insurance and why it pays to shop around. R and I have a bike each one valued at approx $28,000 and the other at $10,000. We insured our bikes with Vero as that suited our needs at the time. I damage my bike and Vero paid out without a hitch, so brownie points there. However I spoke to the Rep here in CHCH about going on a training course (not a race) at Ruapuna with Karel Pavich and Prorider, only to be told Vero will not insure my bike if I go with Prorider to Ruapuna. I was told that I should do any training with Mainland Driving and given a long spiel about why!! I was not interested in going with Mainland as I wished to attend the Prorider course. I asked why Prorider wasn't covered by Vero suffice to say I got a spiel about..just because you are a champion racer doesn't make you an instructor etc... totally disregarding their LTSA accreditation and experience. It was obvious that Vero cannot see the woods for the trees, as I am insured to ride my bike on the big wide dangerous road yet I am not insured to ride it under tuition (to improve my skills) in a controlled environment with Prorider...that reeks of ..... oh what's the word I'm looking for??.. oh well never mind. So I decide to shop around . I was referred to Dave at kiwibike insurance brokers to see what assistance he could give me...well lo and behold we have both bikes insured with a new insurer who not only meets all of our needs and covers us for Prorider courses at Ruapuna .. but at half the yearly premium....yes that is what I said HALF of what I was paying to Vero yearly.... so folks choose wisely
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message.

Half of what you were paying with Vero? That sounds like a good deal!
I was originally with IAG and they charged double what Vero charge! And IAG had a $1500 excess!

Perhaps insurers are being more competitive in this economic climate? But Vero no longer met my needs by not insuring me for my course provider of choice and if the premiums had gone down due to the economy they certainly didn't share that information with me. Hence the reason for having a broker to do the hard yards for me. I have saved $800 this year on premiums and I am very happy. This may not be the case for everyone but as I said in the beginning, "it pays to shop around".

The post I have just spent 10 minutes typing has been lostdue to the KB site now being crap and losing connection every few minutes.

I am now with Kiwibike who offer an efficient service and understand motorcycle insurance (most do not).

The Kiwibike website was not very good and I almost didn't change from NAC. After a phone call I saved around 30%, so I am very happy.

Sort that website out with more than just the standard stuff or you will loose business.

    blimmin hell!!!!!
i'm not sure how much you guys are insuring your bikes for, (or if that is a major factor)
but i got my bike done with state, Full cover, with brake down coverage for $150(ish) a year!!!
and that comes down with my contents insurance with with them by 10%.
and the contents covers my gear in the event of a tumble.

Yes, value of the bike is a large factor. It also depends what kind of bike you have and what uses you want to put it to.
I used to have my 250 with State, which was fine until I moved onto a bike over 500cc (I think thats what their cut off is) then suddenly you're required to pay through the nose, have a stupidly high excess AND they don't cover you for the track AT ALL, fair enough with some track days I can understand them being wary of, but they wouldn't cover training days either, so they lost my bike insurance to Kiwibike, and may very well lose the rest of my insurance to another provider too

had all my house insurance & cars with State. When I bought a new Triumph America a few years ago I though it would probably be cheaper to go with them. The bike shop told me I would be better off with a specialist motorbike insurer (they promoted Vero). Anyway after about 10 mins on the phone to State they asked what type of bike I had. They had no idea what it was, and was going to have to do some research on it & asked me to ring back in a few days.
    Suffice to say I didn't!
Shaken, not stirred in the shakey city!
