Hmmm, we do seem to be getting some indication that insurance companies may be working against improving rider safety..
    For example (s)
2nd hand replacement value for safety gear(including helmets), which they term "sports clothing" and making advanced training somewhat prohibitive in terms of insurance costs..
    Interesting.

The insurance response was initially we won't cover for ANY track training. I phoned again later, got a different person, and it was approved as above. I didn't argue the point, but I did state it was a training specific day with certified instructors, not a track day free for all.
I wonder whether some of that $30 could be used by ART groups to provide insurance excess cover - this would be good for publicity and perhaps encourage more riders to take it up - I know I'd certainly think twice if my insurance company did that to me. I wonder if any of the insurance companies would be up for that...

I agree - I wonder if it's worth a bit of an insurance company survey - (if there's not one around maybe even here on KB) to see what policies each company has on PPE replacement, insurance for ART etc - the outcome of this survey, and the "action" that may follow could be worthwhile to a great many of us...

They say 'sports clothing' yet I am yet to receive from them (after countless requests) a glossary of definitions that they use in the policies. I mean, a pair of speedos are sports clothing, a hockey mask is sports clothing. Now, I dont know about you but the last time I rode my bike wearing speedos and a hockey mask was in bed after 15 beers and a bottle oif JD on my stag night, not on the road.

Fuck it, I'm going to have these insurance companies up and get some answers, its stealth discrimination. They are hard work though, but thats 95.5% of the challenge.....the other 5% is finding my lost speedos and hockey mask.....

I'd actually go along with a hockey mask being protective equipment, and worthy of a full payout if it prevented some serious dental work.
You could use the exact same arguments for wearing one, as you would bike gear.

Insurance are scum, I know of at least one person on the ART I did that was flat out refused cover for the day. I didn't even bother to check with my company.
    Keep on chooglin'

I reckon we are on teh same page here mate. I am having a battle with this companies and will continue to do so. Check out my blog on the MAG website (www.mag-nz.org), look under 'blog roll'.

Yes, these insurance companies are hard work to say the least, but that wont stop us from getting in their face until we get some change and less discrimination.

    Thanks for your comments mate...

    The MNZ Constitution states;

    "3.0 OBJECTS OF MNZ
3.1 To conduct, control, promote, foster and develop motorcycle sport and recreation within New Zealand.
3.2 To govern and administer motorcycle sport in New Zealand.
3.3 To encourage participation by members in international events and to select members to represent New Zealand in International competitions, including World and Oceania Championships, and to co-ordinate and arrange the management of New Zealand teams both within New Zealand and overseas.
3.4 To support and encourage the holding in New Zealand of international, national, regional and local competitions, championships and other events.
3.5 To require all MNZ members including riders, coaches, other members, officers and affiliated clubs to adhere to and enforce any then current MNZ Code of Conduct.
3.6 To provide a process by way of hearing, appeal or otherwise to deal with all disputes and disciplinary matters in relation to motorcycle competition and events run under MNZ.
3.7 To advance the interests of, and provide facilities and services for all motorcyclists in New Zealand
3.8 To represent the interests of affiliated clubs and organisations and of all motorcyclists in promoting or opposing bills, legislation or any proposal or schemes by governmental or other authorities that affect those interests.
3.9 To promote the safety of all motorcycle activities in New Zealand.
3.10 To foster and encourage co-operation between all Motorcycle clubs and other motorcycling organisations.
3.11 To obtain affiliation with any overseas body that shares in whole or in part the objects of MNZ and in particular with
    the FIM.
3.12 To co-operate or associate with any person or body in New Zealand, whether incorporated or not, whose objects or activities or interests are similar in whole or part to those of the MNZ.
3.13 To be a shareholder or stakeholder in any company or other entity that the GB may from time to time determine
may assist in the furthering of these objects.
3.14 To delegate such powers of MNZ as the GB shall deem fit.
3.15 To take or defend such legal or other lawful proceedings as may from time to time be deemed necessary for the
proper conduct of the affairs of MNZ and the fulfillment of these stated objects.
3.16 To act as a representative body for all members and clubs in dealings with Government Departments or representative bodies within New Zealand and overseas.
3.17 To generally do all such things whatsoever directly or indirectly which are incidental to attaining or maintaining these objects and the well-being of the sport.
3.18 It is hereby expressly declared that each paragraph of the objects of MNZ shall be construed independently of and shall in no way be limited by reference to any other paragraph of the objects set out in Rules 3.1 to 3.18 hereof PROVIDED HOWEVER that the foregoing provisions shall not in any way limit the rights, powers and authorities conferred under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908.

Apart from the word "control" in relation to "recreation" I can see MNZ and MAG-NZ working well together in the future. Thank you for sharing that with us.

8 pertinent points out of 18.

I can't see the point in an organisation trying to umbrella Sport riders with Recreational - the groups needs and wants are chalk and cheese, and I have no interest in motorcycling as a sport in any form, so not likely to even consider swinging the MNZ way and have my coin spent on a governing body spending potentially thousands of dollars to ensure little Johnny and big Suzy get to some obscure under 21 All Quakers invitational inter-church faith healing trail ride... or something...

I think twenty squids (and the occasional small top up donation if warranted/permitted) to a group like MAG-NZ or BRONZ to stop me from binning it on a poorly constructed road is a far better use of my coin.
