There's one that races at Puke sometimes, at the classic meetings - it's totally incredible - 160k on the straight with no brakes, no clutch, no suspension, no mufflers and yr arse only an inch away from the rear tyre....and those downward hanging bars.........brave men.

Wouldn't like to have my left leg on the peg whilst riding one, though.

The next movie of the excelsior is pretty cool too -
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

I was told years ago that a well known mile grasstrack competitor - Tui Morgan - had brought his 8 valve Indian out to a flying quarter in the 50's - did something like 111mph...

    Sooner him than me...

    Very Cool.

Ok I have to ask - why are there flames coming out of the holes in the valve cover?

From what I understand those are the exhaust ports, not the valve cover - apparently the holes are to aid with cooling.

As others have commented, you'd want your Nomex undies on to ride it I reckon

Seems like the priority was getting the exhaust out. The Excelsior had exhaust ports in the cylinder, like a two stroke.

Also some rare and original footage of board racing at Daytona:
