For those outside Canterbury who may be interested, see website:

    http://ecan.govt.nz/ADVICE/RECREATIO...ikeriding.aspx

    Hey all,
The Waimakariri river area is the most popular area in central Canterbury for riding offroad bikes and is only 10mins north of Christchurch.
You can ride inland as far up as the Waimak Gorge bridge (depot Rd) on both North side and South sides so makes a great loop from SH 1, is about 120km round trip. River is too deep and wide to cross
The Southside has heaps of off road tracks that criss cross thru scrub and forest, some trails are marked others are not
As per attached website the Northside of river has 3 dedicated motorcross tracks which were built and are maintained by the local council...
These tracks are great and are about 2km upstream from SH1
    Hope this helps regards

What!! Jeepers doesn't Dorkland need to get its act together. People here spend most of their time trying to close down facilities that have been in place for years??

That looks like it'd be a good trip good info mate!
On a Motorcycle you're penetrating distance, right along with the machine!! In a car you're just a spectator, the windshields like a TV!!

'Life's Journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out! Shouting, ' Holy sh!t... What a Ride!! '

The council is starting to lock some of the tracks up from what I've seen. And it's not restricted to the Waimak either.

The gates are locked at night in a couple of places, but during the day you can get on your bike just west of the motorway bridge, and keep heading that way pretty much as far as you like.
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987

The place I've been to is just opposite the NZHA club. Templers Island, directly north of Christchurch airport.
