Checking a new (old) bike over

I just bought and rode home on a road legal second hand bike from a decent seeming guy. I was complacent and didn't really give it a thorough check over, just had a listen and a quick spin on it.

So after riding back to Wellington from the Hutt this is what i found:

Completely my fault for not checking the basics, pretty embarrassed i didn't spot it straight away, was in a rush. From what i gather it had been ridden around for some time like this.

Comfirm what the bike is as it looks like a honda axle same as my 250 I may have a spare you can borrow until you get one sorted,I will be in Wgtn on Wednesday

Thanks for the offer mate but i got a spare one in parts with it so have replacement. You are spot on its an old CB250RS. The WOF is only 3 months old the guy hasn't got back to me but i think the chances are he got a WOF like that as he replaced the forks before the WOF.

a while back I got myself an fzr400 one evening, had a look, took it for a ride etc. then on the way back the headlights cut out completely for a few seconds every so often, good thing i was following a mate.

paid SFA for it so didn't have any hard feelings towards the seller, a bit of warning would have been good though

The "what if" list is long on that one and like most here I think you cant be to hard on yourself but I'm not so sure about the seller though seems a bit, if not careless, at least to casual.
In the end it probably says more about how well you rode it home than you missing something that could have been just finger tight and fell off.

Thinking about it, having one side missing isn't a major, because the axle is quite thick the other side would do a pretty good job of holding it on, all the weight goes upwards.
Not saying I'd leave it like that though.

Glad you got home safe. Reminds me of getting my current bike.
Flew down to Wellington to ride up a Hyosung GT650R to Auckland.
All excited for the cheap larger bike, I set off on my trip. Clutch lever didn't actually start engaging until 3/4 in, front rotors were chewed from some obvious metal on metal, no headlight (yep was night by the time I was approaching auckland) Turns out it didn't have a current WoF either, even though the dude said it did. (He chucked money back my way to help with fixing it back up though)
Everything's sweet now and I'm having fun on a bigger bike, for less than $4k
