If you were to get a pre-1970s bike?

If in view of rego costs one one were to put ones pride and joy's rego on hold and get pre 1970's bike to try and replace the fun what would you get?

ps I'm still trying to decide but keep comming up with an open top Morris 8 which is two wheels in surplus.

Easy a BMW R75/5.... all day every day flat out, electric start, 50 mpg, tls front brake, good handling, versatile, from the autobahns to old Roman roads in Turkey, commuting in London traffic,lugging a sidecar loaded with camping gear...well thats how I remember mine....should get it back together as rego is cheap.
and you can retro fit disc brakes and bigger cylinders of the mid 70's models.

Something pre 1930, British, > 500cc, rigid frame with girder forks

(or maybe a Hog or Indian from the same period)

Why not look around now for a 1970 - 74 bike while the prices are low, there are some good ones out there to be had for sencibile prices. I am sure that anything pre 1970 has had the price jacked because of its age and cheaper rego.
So why a bike up to 10 years away from that rego rull?
Well the first thing to do is put it on rego hold,
then plan the time between now and when it reaches the "required" age to strip and restore the bike back to as close a condition as it was new, or to a state of modification that you want.
So that when you get to regster it, its ready to be ridden, looks fantastic, has increased in value beyond what you paid for it, and you know how good it is.
I have to wait 9 years for my Yamaha XS1100's to be in that time frame,
But I have my eyes on an earier Yamaha XS650 TX-A that I might just turn into a bobber.
It is is a 1972 model,so by the time it is built, it will be the cheap rego, and will look great with the later model XS650 parts used to enhance its performance.

Great trip, and if I was doing it again I'd concider the R75/5 .....no electronics and you can take it apart witht the tool kit under the seat, did a gearbox swap outside Motobin shop in the high street....good times.
