I'm selling up my V8 and the boat

Currently leaning towards a Honda GB400/500 with the sexy single seat

Has anybody got any other ideas of a nice reliable toy? Not really too speed hungry [I'm happy enough with a decent 250 these days] at the best of times.
I'm willing to be paying up to 3k for the right bike, BUT, as a sensible young chap I will be spending a fair bit on buying brand spanking gears [2 piece suit for that extra inch on my....]

As mentioned anybody got any suggestions as to what else I could look at buying?

No cruisers though

Somehow b4 clicking the link I was thinking HSV & Bayliner, and wondering why you would need to sell both to get a bike.

owned 3 GB400's in the past....

a few things to look out for:

starter motors tend to crap out on these, not such a big deal as it also has a kickstart.

Have a good listen for rattly cam chain. The tensioners and/or cam chain need to be replaced with advanced k's and can be an expensive job to fix.

Other than that, a good commuter, but parts are getting harder to come by.

I had an FT400 - almost identical starter set up ... It never crapped out on me ... it did die occassionally, but if you take the outside cover off, there's a couple of contacts in there ... they corroded and stopped the current going through. I regularly cleaned them and had no hassles at all with the starter ...

GB's are great - but lots of newer bikes out there these days. About $5K gets you a nice newish single cylinder.

If you get one, preload the front forks with about 1" (or $1.40 in old 20 cent pieces), and run 5w oil in them. Swap the back shocks for some Koni's or similar.
I also found that running Visco5000 in the motor worked a treat.
Piece of piss to kick over if the electric starter dies.

The shame is that people will pay a lot more for a Jag in similar condition. You can buy a great cond P6 for very little money these days.

I know of one that needs a top end rebuilt [apparently, the guy doesn't know diddly squat] I could grab cheap, but, I'm hesitant as it's been sitting for yonks.

That's good to know, I'll have a peek inside the starter motor if I get the one I'm looking at.

I do like the Goose, but, the GB is just so damn puurty. I wouldn't spend $5k on a single, I'd grab a VFR/RVF for that coin or an SRAD.

I do love the old girl, but, it is a little bit enthusiastic on gas and I'm going to be a student again next year. I'd rather keep it and grow wings, but, I can't, so I'm told

It's a lovely old lass to drive and the noise is delicious.
