300+K's. Attempted a ride to Akaroa with Ms Biff on Friday. Got over halfway there fighting strong winds and stonger ice cold gusts and gave up. Decided that this was best after we stopped at Little River and Ms Biff looked like she was going to cry if she hadn;t been so cold. Not funny almost being blown into the paths of trucks around corners I guess.
The back off to Akaroa on Sunday with Aaron KDX etc. Yes, he is alive and his R1 looks like a street fighter at the moment, with the head light fairing missing. Looked really mean actually. I quite liked it.

Didn't even get the bike uncovered. There were a couple of brief moments when something warmish and dryish on the excursion front may have been comtemplated, but those narrow windows of opportunity soon closed.

Well, the title was lifted from Alberto Granado's published diary of a trip that he and Ernesto "Che" Guevara did in 1952. Their objective was to ride down Argentina to the resort of Baraloche, cross into Chile, ride up the west coast into Peru, spend some time helping at a leper colony and eventually end up in Venezuela. Granado was a 29-year-old biochemist at the time, and Guevara at 22 was one term shy of completing a medical degree. This was to be a "road trip" before they both settled down into their respective careers, marriage, etc.Originally Posted by idb
The movie combined both Granado and Guevara's diaries and the story is told more through the eyes of Guevara than his travelling mate. Hardly surprising, given the latter's fame. It is a journey that profoundly affected Guevara and set him on the path for which he is more famous.
The motorcycle only features in about the first third of Granado's book (which I've read) and the movie. It was a post-WWII Norton 500 and finally gave up the ghost after being dropped once too often in Chile. From that point our heroes took to their feet.
Granado also went on to great things in his life but not as spectacularly as Guevara.
The movie is subtitled, but don't let that put you off. It captures well the innocence of youth and subsequent coming of age of one of the 20th century's more influential and misunderstood people. The actors were well cast. The cinematography is outstanding, giving a great sense of mood and spirit of place. I recommend it highly.
