    Exporting a bike to Australia

I've just had my contract confirmed through til at least June and possibly on through til sometime in 2012 so I'm thinking of shipping my TRX over if it won't be too much of a hassle.

Has anyone shipped a bike from NZ to Australia before? What are the hoops I need to jump through and what are my best options for a 12-18mth stay?

Not worthwhile..... Carnet is expensive and only last for 12 months. Shipping is cheap but customs charges and maf can be expensive. You would be better to sell and buy something over there

Export is easy - but import into Aussie just aint worthwhile - way way way too much bullshit

Take the chance to get something that suits the local conditions

You are looking at around $2K all up to get a bike over there & back. Temporary import for 12 months or less is no big deal, you'll need a carnet. I heard recently that it is no problem to extend the carnet in Oz for another 12 months, but don't quote me on that.

Permanent import into Oz is pretty much impossible as mentioned above. They really don't want jap import cars from NZ flooding in & devaluing their Fords & Holdens & bikes are caught up in the bureaucracy unfortunately.

With a long visit getting something there is probably the best option.

    Cheers

If you've personally owned the bike for 2 yrs, it's not too bad importing it, otherwise........

It's not the kinda bike I can buy another of. It's got over $6k in aftermarket parts which came with it and are nigh on impossible to find anywhere... plus I just loves it.

It'll be a temporary import only unless I end up staying over there after the contract finishes up, but there is no certainty in that. $2k to get it there and back ain't bad - I was thinking $1k+ one way, any idea what sort of money a carnet is? I saw on AA that it costs $375-475 for the application fee, but it doesn't mention any money to spend after that...

Maybe we need to type slower.

You are welcome. Your bike isn't. Mainly because they get less tax off it. They will put every bureaucratic impediment in your way to deter you.

Yeah is that for the a full import with intention of staying in Aussie, or even for temporary import on a Carnet "vehicle passport"? From what I've read on it if you go on a carnet it doesn't get registered in that country and I'm in South Australia so it won't need a safety cert/WOF.

I'd spell it out for him if I were you...

Its only a couple of years... keep posting on KB, so we can see the stages of bike-less depression / withdrawal...

bikeless... lol. I earnt more dollars in the last 6wks than I've ridden kilometers in the last two years.

My problem isn't no bike. It's which bike. And I wants my bike.

Should be going to a trackday in Perth later in the year on a hired bike, and if I'm lucky I might get to take an NCR Milona R for a spin too .
