The bloke that worked on our farm asked me to help him teach his son to ride one Satdee arvo, I said yeah set up a little course & off we went...
Poor little bugger couldn't handle the course or the.... wait for it YZ80...
    I said ...
    LET ME SHOW YOU HOW
well it didn't throw me but (& it is a big but) it took several laps before we got acquainted could't keeep the fron t wheel down in the first 3 gears
He traded it for an RM80 then we got the little bugger riding

Probably wouldn't have happened with a GN. Though you'd have to be careful going from a GN to something with . . . well, you know . . . power.

Naa .. not even .. way back in the day my learner bike was a BSA Bantam (125 two-stroker for the uninitiated) ... no way would that have so much power I'd crash ...

Piss poor brakes might lead to a crash ...

    1) Riding a severe 2smoker, hit powerband (unexpectedly) mid-way through 40km corner. Experience from that was to never overbake the corner until you can see around it.

    2) Pulled a wheelie on my old TS185 only to find there was a slight delay from throttle change to power download.........bike then rode me. Lesson : don't keep adding throttle to a situation

    3) Gave same TS185 the berries one day to roost a corner. Bike got traction mid-roost, and wheelie straight into tree.

I have also had instances on many smaller capacity bikes. Including launching a KTM250 into a tree as I couldn't see the top of the hill.

But I wouldn't trade my scars and the lessons I learnt for anything.

A decent 250 will handle as well as anything....if not better. Then again, I think the majority of the "learner" crashes are from inexperience, not the power of the bike. Restricting the power of the bike will help though.
My own large crash was inexperience, wouldn't call it a learners bike though

It had a narrow and savage little power band that combined with appalling brakes meant it was a handful. It would be crawling, then suddenly it would shreik with anger and leap forwards. If you hit the brakes they either did nothing or locked the front wheel.

Spat me off a few times. Fuck I loved that bike.
Don't blame me, I voted Green.

I think it was inexperience It wasn't the power or the torque, it was the loose nut behind the bars.
