anyhow... heres the guts of the response...
The joints are being renewed as part of ongoing maintenance activity to replace the old joints which are gradually failing. This is an ongoing activity which we have been doing for the last three years. The joint material is a bitumen product which has high elastic qualities to allow for the movement due to temperature change and expansion of the bridge decks. Although the composite material has a stone content this does not seem to be protruding enough at the surface.
Your point that the new joint material is slippery has been noted. The NZ Transport Agency will specify texture requirements in the contract for the next batch of joints and also ask that the previously completed joints be treated retrospectively. As the joint material can only be worked in the warmer weather we will undertake the works in the coming summer.
the shit in the joins seems to be wearing out already. I've noticed more grip as the cagers are grinding it away in the daily trundle.
