Well thats what I did last year anyway as a north islander, I inclued the rainbow, lake sumner and the molesworth in a 4 day weekend. it is a good option.

This is more what I was thinking of doing this year taking the tent with me and staying overnight at one of the camping areas in the clarence reserve, I'm hoping to get a few more from the north island interested in doing a long weekend trip down that way as there is plenty to explore.
Staying overnight in the reserve would give plenty of time to relax and explore the area at a more relaxed pace.

Tenting / cabining (is that a word?) sounds good to me will keep an eye on the thread - my old's live in Kaikoura but would love to explore North and South once you are in - so ride in, do the north back to the middle, camp, do the south and then come out - no pressure - time to relax and enjoy the place - next question who is going to take the 4 wheel drive in with a few cold ones in a chilly bin?

That sounds like a good idea Crim

The next question is which weekend would be best for the most people?

What weekend is the DB1k planned for this summer?

22nd - 23rd January - so you North Island Wallies could come down do the DB1k, bit of quiet touring round central otago and then do the Clarence on the way home - sound's like a perfect 10 - 12 day break in the mainland to me!
Almost wish I was a North Islander................................... what was I thinking? Way too busy up there, can't move for all the people!

Well thats all luck of the draw with NZ weather, I notice they don't have any open days in March or April this year.

Now that would be nice, but not sure I could escape the family for that long at that time of the year, migt have to be one or the other for me.

    Should i bring my togs???

I am keen, the problem is if it rains they close the reserve.

    Edit. Thats a bit negative.

if the weather is fine the reserve will be open and we will have a lot of fun.

I am thinking about heading down for one of the Jan dates as it is the best timing for me.

Joe there are plenty of alternatives down towards Christchurch, with lake sumner, a few other smaller back roads, lees valley or even a tour of the back roads on the Peninsular.
