I think the only part of Rout 66 that hasn't become motorway is the main drag through Flagstaff. I stand to be corrected.

Route 66 only exists in bits: it's not possible to ride from Chicago to Los Angeles on a single Route 66, thanks to the Interstate network and urban development.

There are some towns along the way that are worth a stop. I've ridden 66 from Flagstaff AZ to Kingman AZ. Flagstaff, Williams, Seligman and a couple of other towns are worth a stop. Kingman is nothing much at all really, apart from a big sprawling city with no soul.

Other than ticking a bucket list entry that says "ride Route 66", I can think of some more interesting and scenic routes to get from Chicago to LA, or vice versa, and still take in a goodly dollop of "the real America".

I'm intending to do the bit in Arizona which is said to be the most original piece left and it is much more than just a main street that is left. I see Hitch has mentioned that while I was typing my message.

Have you checked Route 66 out on line:

You must have missed the old part of Kingman, been there a 3 or 4 times and had a ball looking around, scored some good old souveniers too.

yes interstate 40 is concreted straight over the top of it

I found part of the original route 66 (the part featuring the motel with the no vacancy sign in easy rider)

rode fro a couple of miles and came to a dead end with a 20 foot concrete wall with interstate 40 going straight over the top

general outline of route 66 will give you an interesting trip through america, but parts of teh mid west are dead boring endless days of riding through flat featureless corn fields

for my money the rockies take a lot of beating

There's a good detour to the meteor crater between Winslow and Flagstaff. Also from Flagstaff or Williams it's about an hour's ride to the south rim of the Grand Canyon.

So are you watching the series on the travel channel traveling by Harley from Chicago to California along as much of Route 66 as is currently possible? First episode was this week?

Thursday 10.00PM "Riding Route 66". Repeated Friday 4.00PM.

You haven't missed much so far.
