Sitting full test after a year off riding.

Hey all, I sold my ZXR250 when I was on my restricted just over a year ago and have booked in to sit my full next month as I'd rather get that so I can get a bigger bike rather than by another 250 sit test sell and get another within short period of time.

I've arranged to borrow a bike on the Monday and sit the test on the Friday. I've been riding about a year and after advise on the best way to spend that week getting back up to scratch? I am just planning to ride A LOT but anything in particular to get used to?

    Cheers, heaps!

Do you have your full car license?

From what I've heard, the tests for full car and full bike are pretty similar. The focus is more on identifying hazards and responding appropriately than on your riding ability - as long as you can show you are confident and don't make any major mistakes, you should be fine from the riding perspective.

I haven't sat my full bike license yet though (have my full cage one), but that's the impression I got from talking to a few people who have. You could look at getting lessons, particularly if you haven't sat your full car license. Even taking lessons in a car would be helpful, because they teach you what the examiner wants to hear (which hazards to name, what to say you are doing about them, etc).

Ride normally and don't speed. It might pay to find out before hand how accurate the speedo on the bike you are using is as most read a bit above and they will mention it if you go too slow. You have the same earpiece as you do when you sit your restricted. My hazard identification involved me pulling over and sticking my arms out and point at the direction the hazards were in ( Lol, I know) A u-turn, some 70km/h and 100km/h stuff and you'll be done.

the full licence test is a joke anyway, very simple if you have reasonable riding skills, just remember that the guy following you in the car is a hazard (when doing the hazard identification bits). Seriously, because I'm officially "old" I sat my full licence test about 15 months after getting my learners, and it was so straightforward I suspect I could've passed by the time I got my restricted.

As far as practice goes, just ride around some urban/residential areas, go through lots of intersections and do lots of U turns

As for the speedo accuracy, my tester got me to ride along at 50km/h at the start of the test and told me whether my speedo was accurate (and it was, which was good). What branch are you booking it at?

Very keen on a 06+ R6 or a Daytona 675, been reading and reading and I'm just going to have to test ride them both see what feels best I think.

Although a bit concerned with maintenance / repair / modify price with the 675 compared to a jap bike.. Any ideas?

If your worried about moneys.. dont get the 675. Itll cost you an extra $100 just in rego per year, compared to a 599cc jap bike.

Those 600cc jap bikes are the biz these days. Basically anything 2000 onwards is a very nice bike and will give you immense happy faces. Ive got a thou and on numerous occaisions have thought about going back to a late model 600cc just to get back some money on rego and look after the rear tyre funds a bit more.

On the whole full thing.. i did mine a few months ago and i thought it was easier than the restricted. Theres 3 sections. 1st is just watching how you ride (think about speed, lane position, head checking down side streets etc). 2nd section involved pointing out hazards once stopped after going through intersections (really is just point at which way the cars were coming from etc). And 3rd part was just riding in 70 and 100km zone from memory. Never had to do a u-turn or anything that actually took more than a second thought.

I did my full on a hired vtr250 with stuffed carbs and with the headwind i could only manage 70 in the 100 zone. Pulled over at the end and gave me my full licence. I told him i could only do 70 in the 100 because of the bike. He said no problems mate.

Got my loan bike today (Ninja 250R), so much fun getting back on two wheels again! Had a nice wee ride from the North Shore out Waitoki area and back to home on the Hibiscus Coast, then it started raining and blowing strong gusts and was time to wrap it up. Very enjoyable, I've spent too long in a cage, going to love this summer riding!

Full test this Friday shopping Saturday.

I was quite plesantly suprised with my full licence test. It turned out to be short than my restricted... we didn't even get to the hazard detection bit, he said afterwards that "I can see you turning your head to observe hazards, looking in your mirrors, and adjusting your riding to respond to them, so we skipped that section."

So - dont skimp on the head movements and the mirror checks.
