Am I better looking at v-twins in the 600 range e.g. Honda Hornet?
you do know that Honda Hornets are not in fact V Twins but are in fact inline 4's?

Honda V Twins, in order of desirablility:

    RC51 SP2
    RC51 SP1
    VT250 spada
anyother V twin including the 500 Ascot, and that watercooled 750 cruiser that Bubba Shobert raced flat track on: the cut off the shaft drive, turned the motor sideways and went racin'

    VTR1000 "firestorm"

    Seriously: get the SV650

You would be on the road for round 8 grand, and you would learn to ride. Plus its not going to highside you and drill you into the scenery like a lawndart.
Do it - you'll be spending too much time having fun to care about that R1 fantasy.

Apparently the GSXR 750 front ends fit on the SV650 very nicely ........

Didn't the Dover step from a Hyosung to a GSXR1000.......

A guy down the road from my work rides one, has after market cans on it and it sounds pretty good ( almost as nice as an uncorked SV1000 )

I like my VTR1000..went from an NSR250 to it with no problems..If you are going big take it to a couple of track days to learn how to handle it and get used to the power..I Must admit I think I enjoyed my NSR more, it was light and very flickable...Now I ride a whale lol...

I would seriously consider the SV650 with some mods as they are still light-ish, have the V-Twin torque and sound and you can race it in the weekends with great success..Great fun

Simple answer to your question: Honda VTR1000 Firestorm as previously mentioned. Similar to SV1000 but not ugly - nuff said.
