Are pit bikes legal on the road?

I didn't think they were but while doing my morning commute (about 7:15am) across the bridge through Mary's Bay and onwards recently, I have seen a fat dude in hi viz on a few occasions riding what appears to be a Pit bike modeled on a Hayabusa.

I thought he looks way too big, the poor wee thing will snap in half. His butt cheeks hang down so low either side of the seat, he could velcro a skate board to each cheek to make himself a handy pair of training wheels.

    Anyone else seen the dude?
Political correctness: a doctrine which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd from the clean end.

Indicators, mirrors, lights... don't think so.

May the bridges I burn light the way.

They're only legal to ride on a public road if the bike is legal.

This one is road legal, the Suzuki GSXR50, aka Suzuki Gag. The bike behind it is the rare and yummy GSXR750R.

Three years ago I saw one on sale @ Red Baron for around $3000.

The road legal gixxa 50cc pitbike, not the GSXR750R.

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

A couple of years ago I bought a minichopper dirt cheap. I had absolutely no problem registering it and using it on the road. I just had to give them the Vin number and they handed me over a plate.
My understanding from what I had been told was that anything 50cc and under can be reg'd as a moped and doesnt need indicators. You just have to use hand signals.
Someone more knowledgeble may want to correct my interpretation but as I say, I had no trouble and cops didn't even give me a second look.

NZTA (quite correctly IMHO) are sorting out this mess.

Pit bikes and other rubbish registered as mopeds will soon be a thing of the past.
David must play fair with the other kids, even the idiots.
