I did Lees Valley on Thursday morning and the river was quite low and not very fast, axle depth at most. Didn't stop me from having a little lie down in it though.

Story is that this is the Ida Valley (about 15km north east up the valley from Poolburn) Railway Station before it was turned into the MTB rail trail. It is now about 70km north and 1000m higher than its original site. Was put on a trailer and pulled into that site by a dozer.

We spent a night there as part of the first pre run when there was too much snow to get more than another 1km beyond the hut.

As discused I owned bike in 2005 and loved it, only sold it to a chap from Dunedin because I wanted an electric start (DRZ400) as got sick of trying to kickstart half way up a hillclimb etc! Ironic now I own another kickstart bike (XR650R) that is alot more difficult to start!

I'll have to admit I added the purple handguards, the bike didnt have any when I got it and got the purple ones as a freeby from a mate, hey it makes the bike standout eh!

If BEAN can get up it 2up then I take my hat off to him. BTW, when was that ? Was it before the river decided to use it for a new river bed ?

I had the BIG pushed up it by 3 guys (and still burnt out the clutch),and we were all pretty knackered after manhandling 4 bikes up it Everything is doable provided you have the manpower. Also the log you need to go around after the first crossing may be challenging if your not commited
Bear in mind we did this about 1 month ago, so it may have changed now.

Thanks for the pics Matt, I'll put them in my 350 folder. Lovin the bike and the purple hand guards

"There can be only one" New creek to Denniston track.
Like any off road track it can change quickly. The first time I went through (about 10yrs ago) the second stream crossing was only axle deep and the big hill climb was well graded. Now the stream crossing is boudery and deep and the hill climb is rough and loose (like a woman I new once ) for the first bit.
I think Monstaman and Trials rider were heading back through later in the month, so they may have an update

without wanting to completely hijack your thread....
so is it a reasonable days ride to do a loop from Murchison out to Denniston via the Mackley - then Westport and backup up SH6 to Murchison?

    In answer to your question......
We (Piglet and I) left home and did the Mackley and Big river in a day, before tea too,Stayed in Reefton. So it's easily done from Murch

Here's a pic of the tricky bit.... cause I like pics

Hi Mark, That would be a really easy day. In 2008 I did from nelson to Murchison, drop gear at motel, have lunch then New creek to denniston and back up the highway to Murch in time for a swim before a beer and dinner. Although that rocky area looked more like this then.

would doing the track 'backwards' (Denniston -> New Creek) simplify things by turning that shitty climb into a shitty descent followed by a big splash?

may well use Reefton as start finish point
