Pulled over during moped stealing checks

Went down Adelaide Rd this avo and the cop waves me over to the side. I think shit what did I do??

I greet the officer in a friendly manner and am not really fussed cos I was just going for a joy ride.

Officer goes, "We're just doing moped checks (or something similar), as there have been a few stolen recently". He then continues, "Your bike clearly isn't a moped, but we thought we'd check anyway". So he thinks I've stolen this bike. He goes, "We're also doing license checks as well". I hand over my license and he does the walkie-talkie thing. As he's doing that you see about 5 scooters passing by (potential dirty moped thieves!). He then thanks me and sends me off on my way.

As I'm riding I think to myself, if I were a cop doing moped checks, why would I pull over a motorcyclist? ...he must've been a fan of Kawasaki's

Why would anyone want to steal a moped?

There are shitloads of them in Welly. They park everywhere. Some bike parks are sometimes full of scooters. I can see how useful they would be, as wellington City is a bit of a maze.

    Mobile Meth Labs...A Growing Problem

    By Eric Clabaugh
    June 18, 2010

FORT WAYNE, Ind (Indiana's NewsCenter)-It's a growing problem and now, you and your family could be at risk and not even know it. For the manufacturers of meth, it's a new way to spread old poison and now it's putting unsuspecting residents at risk.

What looked like a moped, actually turned out to be a mobile meth lab when police arrested a Warsaw man on Tuesday night. Police arrested 48-year old Kyle Miller of Warsaw for allegedly operating a meth lab on his moped.

It's a new tactic methamphetamine manufacturers are using to avoid being caught.

They produce meth using a two liter bottle or similar device, every 15 to 20-minutes they stop driving to vent the bottle as it becomes volatile, and when they are finished, they throw the bottle to the side of a road still filled with hazardous chemicals.

Sergeant Chad Hill with the Kosciusko County Sheriff's department says "they have the potential to explode. We had an undercover officer that caught an individual with a one potter and when he tried to throw it away it spilled all over him and another officer and it burned through their skin and clothing.

Imagine how much more they could make with a Goldwing!

No doubt they're useful in the city but I figured most people who steal do it to hock the goods off for cash. Can't be all that much money in the stolen scooter business..

You'd be surprised to find out what gets stolen. A couple of months ago there were some guys in Christchurch who stole a whole roll of carpet and walked down the road with it.

The fact that mopeds are usually very easy to steal, just shove a screwdriver in the ignition and you're off makes them an easy target, and because you can just take the plate off it and get another legit plate for it doesn't help matters either.

Possibly a wanna be biker and was checking out what you had?

Sounds more like a motorbike check with a lame excuse than the claimed moped thing, since he let 5 go past..... Would have racked and stacked them all, if that was what he was doing....

You don't even need a screwdriver for some. There's a scooter on Grey St today who left the keys in. I stopped and looked. Thought about it and went NAH
