Float yer bike?

So my son got out "The Long Way Round" again... and we were watching it together.

Observation one. Those monster beemers are way too bloody heavy. Even my Suzi DR650 is somewhat too heavy, (except when the urge takes me to open her waaay up).

Observation two. They faced no challenges (least ways at the biking level) greater than I face on my weekend blats around Canterbury. (I regard it as a Bad Day if a can't find a road steep and gnarly enough that I don't drop the bike somewhere along the way.)

Idle thought.... the only real bummer in Russia (and here) are massive rivers and bogs deeper than your air intake...

What if you could float your bike? Sort of "water wings" for a motorbike. And maybe chain some sort of paddle wheel thingy to your back wheel. There'd be no stopping me then...

I am pretty sure in this thread http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=239330, they do pretty much exactly that. 2 large pontoons one on each side of the bike.

Have a read of that RR its a goodie anyway, pretty sure there are plenty of pictures of them using them.

just get ur self a farm bike for ur adventures, rumor has it that suzuki ltf300's and honda atc 250 three wheelers will float because of there massive tyres etc, aparantly the crusty demons done it and where hooning around in a lake hahaha wont really help out ur dr floating but its still pretty funny to know, would love to give it a go but i dont know any farmers who wouldnt mind me possibly drowning there bike..... in fact i dont atually know any farmers haha

And that set seems to require 4 blokes to tend it.

What I'm thinking of using the same sort of attachment scheme you use to attach snow chains to your 2wd... to attach some sort of paddle wheel to the rear wheel.

The "paddles" needn't be big, in fact it would be better if they were smallish and/or folded down to allow one to continue on without pause on to shingle terrain.

Doesn't need to be very efficient... you have a very powerful engine to turn it!

Amphibious DR650 anyone?
