Another thing i thought of, i was pretty close to doing what you were thinking, is insurance.. i doubt theyd insure you, if they would if would probably be astronomical, if you crashed into a cage and had to do insurance bullshit, dunno if theyd pay out if you were on a bike too big for your license? i think what your thinking of doing requires a big wallet, risk of fines,a new bike. poetntially a new cage for some guy

As far as I know, sure, they will insure you for what you put down, however, you will not get a pay out if you are doing something illegal at the time. Good way to make money for the insurance company. Riding a 400 on a learner = illegal, no pay out for you sonny jim. Stop wasting your f*cking time and don't do it!

if you get stopped, and you're trying to hide the fact that you're riding outside the conditions of your licence by intentionally obscuring the cc rating of your bike you will be more likely to get done for breaching the licence restrictions than if you are riding a 400, registered as a 400, with 400 decals.

If I find someone trying to hide the bikes actuall cc rating for this reason then any consideration for using discretion will be abandoned very quickly. Same applies to disconected speedos ripping off the road user charges and the often found fraudulently modified registration labels. All are pathetic attempts to rip off the system and thereby rip off other road users. I am happy to throw tickets at anybody doing this without any mercy whatsoever.

You are supposed to get cerification for a motor change if the new motor is more hp than the old one.

But , with bikes, the odds of a testing station tester spotting the ring in would be very low indeed, I think.

Only thing is, it would almost certainly invalidate any insurance

Dude, I ride a 750 on my learners, although I have had it for 12 years, and the cops tend to let me off.
But the $400 fine is a bitch, and I have spent three months without a liscence at all. Oddly enough I didn't stop riding then either, managed to bullshit my way out of that twice as well.

The point you all seem to have missed, is that when a cop pulls you over,due to the wonders of the computer age & his R/T, he already knows all about the licence plate/in or out of rego/has a wof or not & who had that plate last anyway [even if it has expired for some years!!}.
It doesnt matter if the rego & WOF stickers are true or artfully forged & if hes going to look any further than checking/verifying your drivers licence it will be at the vin/vic plate riveted to your frame
In my opinion , only bike savvy cops will look for the cc rating stamped on your barrells
You really cant bullshit the law & are only making the consequences worse for yourself by lying in an attempt to cover up previous indescretions

I once had a RD350LC that stated it was a 250, even on the rego. I suspected originally that the engine was not the original, but it turned out to be an error made when first regoing it in NZ. Later I had a Cordia GSR turbo, which stated on the rego it was the non-turbo GSL. Once again an error made when first regoing it. I asked both times if it was worth changing the details to the correct ones (as I had my full licience), both times I was told it was not worth the hassle. Turned out the insurance was way cheaper on the Cordia, even though I disclsed that it was the GSR turbo. No complaints there

My old gsxr 250 said 'suzuki gsxr' and nothing more on the rego. Was quite funny cos one day I was riding north on SH1 and hit a huge pothole at roadworks my rego was bolted under the no. plate and when the back end bottomed out the rego got folded behind the plate still attached. Later that arvo I was on the desert road and got pulled up by a cop in an unmarked WRX of all things (I was doing 114 clicks). He asks to look at the rego I couldn't find it. Then I suspiciously pulled it from behind the plate and it didn't say the engine size. He was convinced the bike was a 400 or 750 (yeah right) but in the end had to give me the benefit of the doubt but I still got my speeding ticket.

I had some cop in whangamata take me to the station coz he reckoned my ZXR wasn't a 250cc (it was honest) mainly coz he reckoned he saw me going into whangamata at over 200kph while he was on his day off, yeah okay, but he was on the old side of life and proberly bored (off peak season) but even with all my evidence etc he still reckoned it wasn't a 250, too big and fast he reckoned.

Not that i'm a great example to follow, one week into getting my risky i brought my first TL1000S, i lived in welly at the time and to be honest unless you were doing something wrong a cop wouldn't give you a second look, cops in auckland are much the same, unless you're riding like a twat they don't bother and most of the time the cop looks at the bike see's it's tidy and doesn't even bother with a WOF an Reg check, unfortunitly i can't get away with the tidy part anymore, infact i get pulled not doing anything wrong because of the way the bike looks.

But one thing i will say is that 250cc are in no way a slow bike on the road, hit some twisties and big bikes are your equal, and plus the 250cc is a shitload of fun to ride hard. Dont be in a hurry to move up to a faster bike, just thrash what you got, and learn.
