Amen to that! I have ridden one But I dont want a bike that will intimidate the Mrs If she gets on with the 230 then its a win! it will be hers, I will get a 450! hehe. Depending on the weight difference... My last bike was a YZF-R6 .. so a manic bike does not scare me hehe.

I have ridden a 230 before, whilst I found it mellow I did not mind toooooo much, but the suspension was real sucky from memory.

the 230 has suspension made of M&M's and and exhaust off a honda civic. if you want to get mellow I think you can get a voxtex ignition curve doofer for the 250 or just get a CRF250x. the R is quite nice and easy to ride.

Hey thats good to hear you can power them down a bit I will have a ride on both 250 and 230 stock and compare them a bit. The CRF250R that I had a play on was very worked, and VERY Fun!. I have not tried a stock CR250R, I presume they rev up quicker and produce a bit more highend grunt, the wheely kind. Where as the 230 is more low down.

I like the idea of the CRF250X as it has a light for trail riding!, but they are more expensive in NZ

im looking at vans at the moment, seen quite a few 4x4 mitsi delica's with low k's for very reasonable prices.

they are a bit smaller than normal vans, wondering if you can fit bikes in the back, 4x4 would be handy.
I'm a coupla days late here as usual, but a mate had a Delica 4X4, also had a Hiace before that. The Delica definitely had a bit less room in it, more bulky internal trim. Still get two bikes in (one facing back one forward) but noticable more hassle to juggle everything in. Ended up with nasty chafing of my new side plastics (sniff).

Can't be sure, but think rear door hole might have been a little tighter too. Found it helped to use a tie down from handle bar to bottom of fork to compress front. Slid in easier after that. Vans need more head room!

if you are able to kick start the R, get the R.

the X is just watered down and heavy in comparison, i ended up doing a shitload of mods to my mrs's old X to get it to perform... and it was still just a typical slow 4 stroke

good to know, thanks, will avoid them anyway - i run high bars for fmx a lot of the time and id rather not have to shuffle everything around just to fit bikes in. Heard a few nasty storys about them since anyway

About 5 years ago I had an old KX 80 SW as a project bike. I discovered if i took the front forks and handlebars off I could fit it all in the boot of my familia sedan, with the back seats folded down.

have a Navara dc ute for moving bikes around. 4WD, 31 tyres and a short deck means its quite high and a bit more annoying to get bikes on and off, but I gather there's nothing worse than being stuck in the wops just after you've finished loading your bike. I guess height from the ground isn't a major consideration for your van though, but 4WD is definitely on the good to have list
Smoke 'em if you have 'em

    Good thread.

Would those in the know about hiace vans 1990-2000ish like to share info about where to check for rust? I understand there are some problem areas.

Also any other common fault to look for.

    Cheers.

LOL, Yeah I agree, however I am now a proud owner of a CRF230f from yesterday. And it fitted in the van mint!, I made a nice little sliding rail contraption that bolts to the floor so I have move the front wheel stay from left to right to fit more bikes etc..

My wife just learnt to ride the bike yesterday and is keen so my plan is working

CRF230 a little under powered for my liking, meaning I have to flog it to get that hint of power but it is the right height for a short ass for me

I stopped riding dirt at 18, I am 27 now and been riding road since 25 just about every weekend and by far a better road rider then dirt! hehe, it took me a while yesterday to learn the best method to assist the bike in turning tight turns (GAS)

If your buying a Hi Ace try to stay away from the 2.4 diesel they pretty slow. Watch for cracked heads on all models. Petrol/LPG idle really low and rough when cold if the valves are burnt. Common around 300,000km

You are pretty safe if all it looks well maintained. I had a mate drive around with a blowen head gasket for a year in his i think he gave up putting water in it because it cant boil that way haha.

The Hi Ace is definitely your best option for vans tho. I Have one. Also fits road bikes in.

Mitisi use to much gas for no hp

I am using 96 Nissan Largo with my YZ450. Have to strope the front down to get her in. Woulve been easier if I didnt have risers, but hey it still gets in there.

And to think before I brought my bike in March, I was going to sell the van for $1000....
    SOOOOOO glad i didnt!!!!!!
