rust stuff

stinking fucking weather. im getting minor rust on my exhaust and a few other places. now, Ive heard of a technique where you make the metal red hot and dip it in oil (or throw some at it with a water ballon)
otherwise, will I have to sand of the rust and paint it with the engine spray paint. the other spray I used just melted off.

I thought (a) my exhaust was aluminium and (b) aluminium doesnt rust
but obviously I was wrong with one of those.

also minor rust appearing on my rear spring. what can I do about that?

Hey Pyro, sorry to give you bad news, but thats chrome you have there! Unfortunatly the rust spreads like an STD unless chrome is kept clean.
You can send the gear shift off to get re-chromed - I have been told there is a good one in Gisborne. If you do decide to paint the exhaust, use VHT spraypaint (available from repco).

Autosol for chrome....
costs about $8 to $10 a tube at mitre 10 or hardware store.

Put a little on a soft cloth (towel) and rub it in....
With another soft cloth rub it off.
Then another real soft cloth polish it.

You dont need much on the cloth, and it does quite a good amount of area.
Do it in little sections at a time... rather than the whole lot (all exhausts) at once.

There are different autosol tubes out there so make sure its for chrome.

Yeah it's surprising how clean you can get rusted kit using the stuff. Sometimes I carefully use steel wool to attack the real badly rusted bits, using autosol to finish off.
