If you like gravel, heading South from Paihia take the back road to Rawhiti, nice bit of twisty gravel which links to the Old Russell road, you could also try the Twin Kauri road if like the sound of banjo's. West to East Donnellys crossing is fun & you come out on the Twin Bridges road to Kaikohe. Lots of tarmac & gravel twisties. SH1 over the Mangamukas is a hoot, SH 10 down the East coast is scenic but pedestrian, turn off to Whangaroa harbour before Kaeo & take the Matauri Bay loop for more giggles. Their is a gravel road from Kaitaia to just south of Mangonui but the name escapes me.( Back river road?) Any hoo, lots of choices to get dusty & possibly slightly startled.
You can also ride through Puketi forest from SH 1 to SH 10 if you really, really like banjo's.
The Waipoua forest is obligatory too.
Sheesh, I think thats enough for now.

Lots of gravel between Brynderwyn's - Dargaville and Whangerei Personally recomend Gorge Rd, Paparoa Station Rd, Golden Staircase Rd and Ararua Rd. Too many other good ones in that area to describe.

North of Whangarei, Whananaki South Rd, Pigs Head Rd, and Kiakanui Rd onto the old Russell Rd. Couple of diversions down to DOC Camp Sites and beaches that are worth a ride as well

    Have Fun

Forgot to mention, Punaruku Rd is not really big bike friendly towards the top just in case you have a spontaneous moment of "I wonder were that track goes?"
