Not sure if you guys have kids or not but Geocaching is a great pasttime if you're travelling to other places by car & want to give them a break. You'll be surprisd how many are round your area that you didn't know about.

Or you may already know about it...

    Talking Ordered a 76cx

I knew there was a reason I was procrastinating.

Checked back yesterday and the 76cx is currently $180 at West Marine. I've just ordered one, which should arrive next week (hope so!). Got a deal on some accessories, too, by asking nicely.

I very nearly talked myself up to an NZ new 78s but decided to keep the coin for the bike itself. If I get hooked, a 62s could be on the shopping list in a couple of years but I reckon the 76cx will do what I want for now.

I'm planning to order a RAM mount from GPSCity so if anyone is after any bits and wants to split postage, PM me by 8pm today.

    Thanks for the advice

    Chasio

PS Padmei - yes, Geocaching is of interest. We've done letterboxing on Dartmoor a few times and it sounds like a global version of that... A 62s would be perfect for it

Congratulations on your purchase, looks like a decent price on a decent unit to get you started where you want to go.
You now have much experimenting ahead of you to find the set up that works best for your navigation style.
Several years down the track and I'm still experimenting from time to time with page sequences and different data fields displayed etc.

Just recently discovered how useful it is to have one of the 2 data fields I have displaying above the map to be designated to the 'pointer'.
It is effectivly a little red arrow pointing in the direction of the next via point or waypoint.
It would have eliminated the issue at the only real point of confusion I had up the Nevis where on my screen it looked like the route line was going two directions. Now the arrow would show me which way to go to the next waypoint so as not to end up at the previous one again.

Actually I think I'll mention that in the official thread tonight if I can set it up for a screen shot of what I mean when I go home from work.

That's the main issue I have with the Nuvi 500/Zumo 200. The non-adjustable fields

Hey what about us mature types on our moto's.
2 gents, staring at devices clutched in their hands, wandering around in circles, then suddenly disappearing into the bushes. 5 min later wander out looking pleased with themselves, onto the bikes and away.
Geocaching aint for the fainthearted when there's an audience.
    cheers

Thanks The pointer sounds like a good idea; and where's the official thread?

Been playing with mine. It came with a 1GB card (bonus) and I have a 512MB and a 2GB knocking about, so as to make map management a bit easier. But bugger me, the spring on the card release is pretty pokey: I nearly lost one out the window into the flower-beds this morning. Technique has been adjusted to suit.

The combined topo/routing map is a bit out of date for road use but the weekly updated ones solve that.

BTW if anyone has a copy of the tide tables that come with the NZ Bluechart that they're willing to part with, please PM me!

    Cheers - Chasio
