    That wasnt Steve. the studio wouldnt let him do it (worried about liability and such, also the nonavailability of the star for the rest of the film... shades of Plan 9 from outer space)

    the jump was done by Bud Ekins (or Elkins) who was a stunt rider, and desert racing buddy of Steves.

    but the movie rules, you're right.

    For those of you who like music theres a great song on the Drive By Truckers album "Buttholeville" called "Steve McQueen". its a tribute, obviously.

    Cool as he was, he wasnt very nice to his wimmin folk: Ali McGraw particularly.

    The stunt in the film was done by a stuntman, but Steve McQueen did it as well without the cameras rolling, just to show he could.

    I've just finished reading a crappy biker book whose name I won't mention as it doesn't deserve the publicity. The best thing in it is a chapter on McQueen. He ruled.
