VT Magna 250 - Advice for 1st oil change

Just got the bike last week (my first). The guy that sold it to me said it would need an oil change soon so I'm gonna tackle it this weekend. Figured I might as well stick a new filter and spark plugs in while I'm at it.

My question is this: can someone recommend where to buy and what type of oil, oil filter and spark plugs I should invest in? I'm based in Wellington. Not adversed to buyin online.

Service manual recommends SAE10W-40 or SAE20W-50. I'm thinking 20W-50 might be better as the weather here rarely (if ever??) gets below 0c.

Its a cartridge oil filter so I'm guessing I should have no problems taking it out without a filter wrench? I know how tricky filters can be to get out without one from servicing my own car back home. Usually end up hammering a screwdrive through the fecker.

Any info is much appreciated guys.

hammering a screwdriver through it is a bit mickey mouse. get a large pair of slip joint pliers for the job will be much tidier and you can use them to tweek up the new filter aswell

Doesnt look like I'll need a filter wrench as they're cartridge filters. I'm more interested in finding out what current Magna owners are using in their bikes and where they get their stuff. Sure I could get OEM stuff from a local Honda dealer but they'll add their own mark-up as well, which I'd obviously rather avoid!

Run it on some good mineral oil according to what the manufacturer recommends. 15W40 should be fine in your bike. Spark plugs for Honda bikes can be quite expensive.
