but would be good to know if your commin so we won't have to wait arround?

will get to meet some of you lot some day I suppose

    cheers NF
Yep definitely will be in touch if I don't make it.
But weather looks tolerable at this stage so chances pretty good.

So how does this look for a plan.

Meet at Kakaho Doc campsite at 1pm on Saturday 8th Jan 2011.

Google maps link to approx site location It is pretty much on Kakaho road.

Plan is to have a look around the forest for the afternoon/evening camp at Kakaho doc campsite (first come first served for space, talked to Doc sites have been busy but not full to capacity and there are 2 other campsites in region we could use as backup.) or head home for locals.

Sunday head out of the forest head towards National Park, through the 42nd Traverse and maybe Fishers.
Depending on weather/how I feel I may go stay another night in Kakaho campsite or maybe over to something in the Kaimanawa Forest Park or back home to AK.

Nic, no problem to join us.

And yes it would be tent required camping, that is assuming there is room, as it is a first come first served camp site (I think).

Will have to play it by ear at my end, I assume you are traveling with someone else, so if I don't make it I am not bailing to leave you solo?
Plenty of room there at present. I came through there the other day, From Pureora Forest end....There are some good ruts through there and some very fast roads...

One thing to note is if you are staying at Kakaho with us you will need to bring food, they have BBQ facilities so we can at least cook some stuff.

You don't want to be like me on the Point Pouto ride who thought "riders must be self sufficient" mean there would be room service/fast food deliveries.

Nearest fuel/food (servo food) is here

Nice one Mark, do you have any GPS tracklogs that I could see of your routes through there? especially that center of the north island spot.

    Cheers.

If you enter from Kokaho Rd end, it leads into Link Road. If you follow Link road until you see a sign on the right YMCA camp, take that, this is the Access Rd, it leads to the centre of North Island marker...
If you are going from Link Rd end, it is signposted on the left, it is Access Rd and looks a dead end but it does go through according to topo maps and comes out near the end of Link Rd/Kokaho Rd....
I am trying to find my .gpx for you now...But, they are in my signature link..

Make sure you give Link Rd a hiding and the small paper road near Wharepapa Rd and the other one, they are fast and wide...

    Unhappy bugger!

I won't be there on Saturday

Today I rather inelegantly dismounted my mountainbike - got an ambulance ride out of the forest to the hospital for stitches in my left knee.
The anaesthetic wore off pretty quick and I felt the last three !

    Have fun

Yeah, that's a bit sucky nic. Take care.

I might catch up with you guys along the way for a bit. I'm heading that way a bit later today.

I did the 42nd fully loaded on 990 on evening 01/01/11. 2/3 worn scorp on rear & fresh conti on front. It was a bit of a handful but do-able. Sad to say but I came to a stop on the loose rock covered bedrock based hill on the mountain side of the main river crossing. There's a little side track that I got around it with. Not much fun backing the loaded bike back down! Watch out for mountain bikes if going towards the mountains - that's the uphill direction (& after the rain the clay surfaces nearer the mountain end).

    Have fun.

I was heading south towards Waiouru, took a turn just after I saw you on Ranganui Rd, heading towards Pureora...

Yep, that'd be me. I stopped down the hill wondering if you'd turn back. I was meeting someone so I didn't hang around too long. I really enjoyed my ride though there.
