Fifty four people have been killed on Central District roads so far this year – more than any other police district in New Zealand... last year was the highest in recent history with 59 people dying on Central District roads, which include Palmerston North, Whanganui and New Plymouth.

And with the busy New Year period still to come, last year's morbid record could be soon toppled.

Acting Central District Road Policing manager Senior Sergeant Kris Burbery said officers took road deaths personally, and would work hard to avoid any more. "We can enforce, we can provide some education along the way but we can't sit in the car beside these people."

Extra staff have been deployed on district roads over the holiday period, while a speed tolerance level allowing motorists to drive a maximum of 4km over the limit is being strictly enforced.

Operations this year focusing on motorcycle safety and centreline offences had been successful, he said. Forty five of 350 motorcycles pulled over since November 15 were found to be breaking the law, while 902 lane usage, failing to keep left, overtaking and intersection offences were detected.

"From a policing point of view I like to think that our actions have saved lives but again you can't measure that," Mr Burbery said.

I imagine that they are measuring that but if they cannot say there were fewer MC deaths then I guess they won't pull the figures out on that one for the media.

Lets face it, the type of people motorcycling attracts are the type of people that would normally ignore 'the law' anyways. So, it makes perfect sense that they're being pulled over quite often in the hopes that they are breaking the law - more chance of getting revenue out of every motorcyclist pulled up compared to pulling up cars.

Don't pretent like motorcyclists are 100% blame free here.

No ones pretending we're blame free, but 45 out of 350 is only 12%... it also doesn't say what constitutes 'breaking the law' - rego a few days out, WOF overdue, 11kmh over the speed limit?

This statistic is much more significant:
"902 lane usage, failing to keep left, overtaking and intersection offences were detected during the operation"... those are the actions that result in accidents.
