If the river is not too high it should be fine, I've been through there a couple of times with mates in bog standard 4wd's and in vintage cars with no problems.

You can check the river flow here

There was a discussion about doing this on road bikes a while back, sounded pretty doable until the river got up around 200 cumecs which kind of killed that idea.

The '20 was better through the river on 24 instead of 21" wheels, except that the rear wheel only brakes didn't work for a while until they dried out.

The river levels appear to be falling. I've crossed several times in both directions on regular tyres, no problem. Stay to the upstream side of the crossing.

Did that back in the nineties when the river was low

The crossing should be easy as right now provided you pick the right path, should only be knee deep at worst. The Okuku at it's confluence with the Ashley River (WAY downstream from the ford) it is as low as I've seen it for a long time and all but the main braid has dried up. The watershed which feeds it is not the same one which took all the rainfall which flooded the larger rivers recently.
