I would consider spending your Xmas break learning to spell proper like.

    Just saying is all.

How tall? and how much heavy are you? The thing is that if you get a 85, you might find you are too big for it in no time. You might be better off getting a 125.

To be honest, any of the jap bikes are good. Go for as new as you can get. What is your budget? KTMs are pretty good also, but you do pay a bit more for parts.

the KTM is probely the fastest and best suspended, but it is the most expensive to by, and to maintain,

the KX and RM are probly the best for learners, they have a power valve motor whcih gives is more bottom end,

the YZ is a better expert bike with very good top end,

the CR was like the YZ but has not been sold since 07 i think,

if you are looking second hand take the bike on its condition, not its colour,

and if you are buying new, look at the dealer support you are likely to get, and if they are into moto at all,

Yep, you need a 125 for sure. Same dilema as the 85cc though as there is not much to choose from due to manufacturers decrease in demand.
KTM,YZ and RM would be the picks. Depends on your budget though.

I hate to make Scott look good, but that's excellent advice on all points

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares? ...He's a mile away and you've got his shoes

    My kids have a '99 YZ80 and a '01 CR80.

The YZ80 has awesome topend and corners really well. Handling performance prob helped with ohlins shock, and currently on new tyres. Runs a clean 8 plug. Better flat track racer. Easily the quicker bike when it gets on the pipe.

The CR80 has good bottom end and tractors up hills strongly, due to flywheel weight. Plug fouls regularly. Runs a 6, with smaller jets than factory. Handles well but not quite the same as the YZ. Tyres at 85% rear, 100% front, so maybe rear edge may be telling factor handling wise.

My 14 yr old son who rides both prefers YZ on flat track and is impressed with lowend power of CR on trails. If the CR didn't foul as much, he'd prefer the CR overall. (YZ can't have flywheel weight mod)

If your big enough for a 125, then you may as well get a 250f. Way more rideable

    Oh I don't know Arj.

He's only 14 and they need to be able to ride a 2T first IMO, to make them a better rider. It teaches them balance and most importantly clutch control.
Yes, the 250 4's are easy to ride but its the rider skills they learn from young that is important.

Easy is not necessarily(where is spell check on this thing?) best.
