250 2T like i said was too touchy and too much power, but with the mod you suggested it might be ok?.
Why do you recommend that over a 125?
you wont be unhappy with a 125 2t - i love my cr125 to bits, and i can ride it as quick as my mates on their 250's, because they cant ring the shit out of their bikes like i can (as if they do they will end up on their asses). yes, the 125 has less power, but that means you can ride it to the max, have heaps of fun and not get into too much trouble - its way more addictive than buying a bike with too much power that you have to be careful to avoid all the time. only recommenation is buy a later model 2t, my cr125 is great, but i rode an 08 kawasaki kx125 - it was way quick, and unbelievably more power so i'd recommend something like that, and at around 4k, they are bloody good value

Recently got a 2008 YZ125. Very happy with it. Was riding a 2006 kdx200, which was awesome.
The YZ is meant to have more bottom end (for a 125 2t) than the other 125 2t bikes. I can't verify that though.

Having said that, the transition from the kdx200 to the yz125 has been enjoyable.

Occasionally miss the comfy kx200 seat though :P
