    Monowai to South Arm should be a fairly easy day trip there and back I would have thought.
    You can do Te Anau - Monowai - South Arm & back in an afternoon no worries. It's a cool ride. Great views from the top of the Borland, went up there again on the way to the Burt: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=645718

    A mate of mine & his missus went from W to S arm on their MTB's a while back, he reckoned it was a bit of a scramble in places but pretty good fun. He is a bit of a hardman at that sorta stuff though

    + 1 On the Borland rd. Really nice ride. I think it was 50km each way. Only saw 1 vehicle in there, about 1/2 way in, just before you drop into the valley.

Although I don't think you'd get one for riding a bike over as they all seem to be for tourism operators, comercial fisherman, or power station maintainance. You'd also have to take your bike across to the west arm on a boat

    see attached pic for map:

    Blue = can do

    Red = not allowed

    Green = permit needed

    Did this ride last year. Te Anau to Percy Saddle and back just under 200ks. Just before South Arm turn left over bridge, takes you as close to Percy Saddle as you can get from this side.( thats the red line on map). you get to the last pylon. South arm has the biggest sandflies, don't take your helmet off.
