Ok, so do we just want to meet at the Peg at 9am? Depart as soon as all expected people have arrived, convoy to Amberley, park up, unload and ride.... or what do we want to do? Original Dirtys have bailed so it's just myself, one none KB mate on an unreged bike and Whatastoner and flashg at this stage.

Today was fun in the Waipara River, water level was the lowest I've seen when in there.
We started with four, two of us went all the way up the Waipara riverbed in to the gorge until the public sign saying you can not pass this point without permission. Then back to the pub for refreshments and eventually back to the parking area near Amberley.
    Other two headed back early.
    Few piccys from today...
1 - Four of us, one bruised thy among us. People sitting in the shade to the right.
2 - Sign in the gorge says 'Do not Pass'.. or something to that effect.
3- Somewhere in the gorge, on the way back to the pub.
    4- Snapshot of FlashG
5- Chips at the Waipara Pub... sauce provided.

Just looking at the tracklog in Googleearth and another 500 to 600m round the next bend past that sign we stopped at is the actual gorge where the 4x4 pictures I'd seen were taken.
For anyone interested we stopped ~16km upstream from the Waipara Pub exit.
Pics of Track over Sat View and closer up of the end of the line.

I recall a couple of stretches of soft stuff 100-200m at a time but nothing that would stop me taking a big bike fitted with knobblies - you'd want to be happy maintaining momentum though...

Are you sure you're not thinking of somewhere else? Maybe you didn't follow the river all the time.

It felt like it was more soft than not to me.
It could be done on a bigger bike with appropriate tyres and the occasional helping hand or two pushing, but I'd only do it for the novelty of it and expect it to be real hard work keeping the front end from washing out and climbing up some banks if you loose momentum.
