Hey kids,
Some of you lovely people were nutting out on some ideas as to why my XT600 stalls in water crossings.
Three ideas are:
1) There are 3 tubes that hang down from the carb. When I block all three, which includes the carb overflow tube, the bike stalls over about 10 seconds.
2) The wire connecting to the spark plug could be slightly dodgy causing a short when splashed, thus no spark, thus no go power. However, to test this, I've had the bike idling and drenched it with the hose for a good few minutes, directly onto the spark plug, no problem at all.
3) given that 1st is geared kinda tall, maybe at the slower in-water speed with lots of throttle, the carb floods?
On the Malings/Edwards ride a while ago when it did this, I had to use choke to get it running again but didn't need to this time. ADVGD thought it sounded like the carb breather hose getting blocked by water and causing issues with vacuums. He had the same problem on his DR, re routed his carb breather hose and voila, no more issue. The breather on the XT is already above the air box but I don't know what 2 of the 3 tubes hanging from the XT carb actually do
I wonder if this is tied to the other issue this bike currently has i.e. no grunt down low, no torque so something's not right in the carby possibly.
You can hear the engine suddenly die at about 33 seconds in.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

kennys xt used to cut out in puddles at the waimak - not sure what he did there
my old 99 tenere used to splash water from the back tyre into the airbox causing the bike to cut out. But that my not be what yours is as i always had to drain my carb to get it going again. It would idle but not rev
"1) There are 3 tubes that hang down from the carb. When I block all three, which includes the carb overflow tube, the bike stalls over about 10 seconds"
which is what the water is doing - blocking the tubes
i think you need to look on the suzuki sv650 forum........

edit- doh maybe not - should have read the rest of your post properly
Peetey, on the ttr the tubes are routed from the carb to high up under the seat. Why not do the same?

I thought it was just lack of commitment from me but the Gas Gas has breathers hanging low down also.
Peeteey i would think the lack of power is from your very restricted muffler. It would make sense to move those hoses as suggested by ADVGD but leave drain hose where it is (hard to drain water up hill ) then camp by a river and don't come home till it's sorted haha

And take a fishing rod ( it could take a while tell the wife )

will post what time im leaving closer to the date. plan will be to drop gear off at backpackers and then fuel up at kaikoura
Ha ha, thanks lads. Am picking up t connectors to fix tubes today so can leave then hanging down but will run another tube up high so they can still function as overflow but can get blocked.
I have a new muffler for it, hopefully getting that installed tomorrowgonna sound awesome
I like the idea of camping near a river Flash, have actually been thinking about that tho am not keen on fishing, would rather look at them than catch em.
