Having owned and thrashed various 2 and 4 stroke 250's around Bay Park raceway, Manfield and local backroads around Hamilton in my younger days I've found 2 strokes would beat a 4 pretty much everywhere.

Most of the 2 strokes if tuned well would have the better part of 20k/h over the faster 4's in top speed with an RGV250 and a ZXR400 being a fairly fair contest. These were in the days before the RS250 came out, I've heard they are a little faster still. Acceleration wise the 2 stroke would just leave a 4 behind.

I used to get 190km/h out of my old GSXR250RR after fitting of a race exhaust some minor work to the rubber carb mounts and 1 tooth lower on the front sprocket

general magazine opinion appears to be that the RGV was quickest till the RS came out (not sure what year so may not strictly qualify as pre 95).

The Rs actually made a few less bhp despite the same engine but the chassis is generally regarded as the best 250 ever (hence why Aprilia have ruled the 250 GP since they entered).

First time out at Puke I had a chat with someone on an RS250 and they said they had an indicated 220kmhr down the back straight. So even with a typical 8% margin of speedo error its still pulling over 200kmhr. My zxr ran out of gears at 190. My gauge of how much improvement I made on my entry onto the straight was the number of times I could bounce the rev limiter before getting on the brakes for the hairpin! lotsa fun

250's rock. So much fun and still wickedly capable (plus the kudos of beating guys on better/bigger bikes is a neat feeling)

Lol, not really but its always good to have another rider with similar sized bike in the group so you can have your own little fun. FF, you should bring one of your off road 250s to make it a proper 250 chalange.

Just wanting to get your opinion on what's the fastest 250 made between say 1985 to 1995. My mate's got a Yamaha FZR-R 250 1989 and reckon's it's pretty good, what do u guys think?
    Mine.
    Without doubt, and no questions.
Don't even try to argue. It will eat you. Alive.
Most of the time I ride it quite slow, so as not to draw attention to myself, but I'm sure there is nothing on the road or track that can touch it.
Just take my word for it.
And if you do overtake me, you will know that I am just holding back, and probably in third gear.

    Bwahahahahahaha

Are you the guy who rode that RGV 250 with out side farings running Rennsports on it on the Coromandle Ride?

The fastest 250 I've ever riden was a Husky 250,around 1985 I think...water cooled but no power valves, long travel twin shock suspn and drum brakes. Some clown had won the NZ Enduro Champs on it a year or 2 before I was playing around on it - dunno how, this thing had the most mega king hit power band I've ever experianced, totaly unridable as far as I'm concerned.I would sit on the gas cap waiting for the sting, but no way could I ever get full power applied - road, off road, dirt track,it just went apeshit when it came on the pipe! I saw one guy who reckoned he could handle it no sweat...pulled it into a wheelstand!! the bike launched from under him and landed 10 metres doun the track! You gotta hand it to guys who can ride stuff like that like kids bikes.I used to have a TM 400 - tame as a pussy against this thing.

I had an '87 RG250F that I used to commute from Auckland to Wellington and back on every weekend for 3 months. It was bloody fantastic. Enough power to be fun (180km/h top speed), very reliable, really comfortable, and handled really well too.

I also owned a GSXR250 from new for a year and it was a sweet little bike. 170km/h top speed, but superbly chuckable. Used to dice with much bigger bikes on the Rimutakas, riding round the outside on turns with everything dragging.

Both have their strengths. The 4 stroke doesn't need as much maintenance, while the 2 stroke had a much better sensation of power.

By the way, 2 strokes actually have MORE torque than 4 strokes for a comparable cc rating. it's just that torque and power curves tend to follow each other on a 2 stroke, hence the powerband effect, and 4 strokes have a flatter torque curve (comparatively) through the rev range.

Yep,trials bikes require the most bottom end torque of any bike - but they are all 2 strokes.I ride a 4 stroke trials bike...and it's sadly lacking in grunt.

the fastest standard road going 250 produced so far is the kr1 or kr1 s from kawasaki performance bikes tested one of these at 140 mph a standard rgv m version when new about 130 mph.my rs on the back straight at pukekohe 209 kph standard.no 4 stroke diesel living or dead will get any where near a standard 2 stroke, standard means non restricted. But they do handel quite well but again not quite in the same group as the tzr nsr or rs.in club racing in the uk rgv 250 s were the ones to have.in japan nsr s and tzr s ruled the roost.but nobody seems to like them any more but they were and still are the closest thing to a works ride most of us will get.

from what i've heard the aprilia isn't too bad, and it really comes to life in the twisties. apparantley thay can continually ride right around the outside of a vfr800 when the corners come up, not to mention brake about 50 metres later........

it's not all about balls out speed in a straight line, we'd all ride 'busas if that was the case
