Opinions on GXR400 pls

hi guys

i have seen quite a few well-priced GSXR400 on trademe lately

im a kawasaki fanatics when it comes to 4 stroke but they're out of my budget

and the gxsr400 doesn't look too bad either

can you please tell me about the ups and downs about them ? what normally fail on them ?

Not a bad bike,a little big for a 400(which is good if you're a bigger guy),but seem to have enough grunt to haul 'em along ok.
Biggest prob seems to be the ignitor,which is nearly impossible to get s/h.My mates one has shit 2nd gear too,but I think that's due to abuse more than anyhting....

Which year?
The early ones (eighties vintage) had weak coils and the CDI can give problems. The coils can be replaced with something else (GSX1100 on my Impulse). The GSXR250 CDI works, or ER&D make new replacements. Don't know if these problems still exist with the later models.
No 3 conrod gave problems with serious racing abuse (ie major overrev). Not a problem on the road.

bike will be for road use only, may be occasional track day ? (like once a year or so)

and interested on 91-92 onwards model

so yeah, what are the goods and bads on these 91-92 onwards model

PS : they are bigger than other 400s i've seen, but i guess as long as they still have a decent grunt not completely gutless, then i wouldn't mind

The one I used to own was wicked!
You just got to keep an eye on the CDI's. They were the things to go apparently.
There is no shortage of speed, handling is great-stable as anything!
Looks good, sounds good.
Breaks really good. And launching is superp!
Just have a tendancy to scrape the right side fairing, when cornering hard out.(only done on the race track.)

i had a 92 gsxr400r for a while. good bike, bit heavy, revved high when cruising, but pretty strong. i'm 6'2 and it fit me fine. have a look here:

Im reviving this thread because Im after opinions on the GSXR400 now. Please anyone else with some worthwhile opinions or comments on them?

I have ridden a couple of them on short rides and found them quite nice.

Fast, quick steering, sharp handling, look really good! (always important!)

I would definitely own one.

Comparing them to the other 400's (overall and IMO) I would rate them 2nd equal with the CBR400RR, I would rate the RVF 1st and the VFR NC30 3rd.

Nice, but not a Honda. Not quite as racey feeling as a ZXR400 (which are all shagged and raced) but the handling is great. A bit slow, go for a VFR400 which isn't a great deal faster, but the motor is nicer to ride, if you know what I mean. Never were really fashionable with the cradle style frame, but doesn't make a pinch of difference (imho).

good cheap fast bikes
well balanced, very nimble with enough power to keep you smiling.
the down side can be the electrics,
my old gsx x 400 used to have a few issues, would cut out near redline in top...
overall a great fun bike

a cbr400 is a better bike imo, bit sharper

I had an '86 model back in 1990. Was the white-faced instruments blue and white model. I loved it.Was quite fast for it's day and I never had an ounce of trouble with it, despite occasionally racing it at Ruapuna.
Handled good too.

But I guess this is not the model you are after.

I had an 88 model (around then anyway, the yellow headlight one), was a great bike. Had a problem with the regulator, but I had it swapped for a unit off a honda and no more probs. I had the bike for around 3 years I think, was reliable and fast. When I traded up, I took a later model out (around 92 or 93 I think) and was amazed at the difference. Was noticbly faster and better handling, and my old one hadnt been any slouch.

Had a mate with one too (again, I think his was around early 90's model), his one lost second gear at some point, so I dont know if this is a weak spot on them.
