Mind if I ask what they are?
Are we talking reflective, load cells or diffraction etc???

And how are they being processed? RTU's / PLC's or MUX?

sounds BS to me, i thought the whole point of all the carefully and regularly calibrated cameras etc that are used to enforce speed limits was to remove all the mumbo jumbo around this kind of thing. how much time elapsed between the alleged offence and the officer paying you a visit?

big brother watching the motorway thing sounds bogus too, plenty of mates done plenty of silly speeds on plenty of motorways with nary a knock on the door.

From what I understand the sensors are purely for traffic flow and monitoring congestion. They count cars etc.

Cameras are there to help monitor traffic flow and control lights at junctions and also provide essential information to support emergency services such as Police, Fire and Ambulance.

As I understood it, if the police require support to capture a speeding motorist they can get help of the NZTA control centre to apprehend them (monitor their position and direction etc) but doubt they have the capabilities of getting info on your speed. (something I should have asked when I was there)

If the people monitoring the motorways etc see behaviour like speeding at 200km plus or erratic driving. I would expect them to contact the authorities.

Disclaimer: I don't work there! So I am not totally familiar with all the details. I just visited the site and talked to them about this sort of this while I was there.

just to clear up some of the claims on this thread

Has anyone recieved a ticket from speeding on a motoway where the only evidence was from cameras (not speed cameras)?

I too have been in the control room and I understand that they must get a very clear magnified picture of your licence plate which most of the cameras cannot do. I dont think they are actively looking to catch speeders but will use footage as evidence to help if needed. (this of course may change as technology and political desire changes)

The op has stated that he was clocked with radar.

Here's to them bringing the open road speed limit back up to 130 like it was in the pre 70s! Or was that just the motorway? Either way!

And from what I understand from a friend they still have to clock you with a device like a speed camera or radar. The traffic cam footage does not tell them a precise and exact speed so cannot be used to issue an infringement.

I think the op said he was speeding when a cop on the other side of the motorway checked his speed with a radar or laser gun and only used the motorway cameras to id him. As far as I know the only cameras that can focus on number plates are at the overhead gantry on the Puhoi stretch.

I doubt the motorway cops use the cameras to check speed.
