He could have slowed down slower. Lady driver might have caught his brake lights (would have been on longer) and also if you slam on the anchors quickly, the driver behind may not perceive how quickly they are stopping so don't brake hard enough.

Having said that he was stationary for a while and looking into the sun? Maybe she just wasn't paying attention.

Haha.... there ya go So it was his fault as he shouldn't have stopped so quickly? Irrespective of how fast you stop, the person following has the duty to follow at a safe distance with enough space to stop if they have to. I don't think even insurance companies can try to argue this to get out of paying. As for the woman not paying attention...

I read in a thread a while back that when braking to give a couple of blips first this wakes up the following road users to the fact you are braking.

I also love my hazards. when it all slows on the motorway flick those on and 50/50 vision front and rear (I don't like charging into lane splitting until I've figured out what is going on)

At least with the video there would be no doubt about the insurance claim.

This is true, but I don't know how it'd be otherwise disputed... "He just suddenly jammed his bike in reverse and smashed into my stationary vehicle! Honest!!"

Video would be good for other "incidents" though

So now, when I'm not carrying my pack, the large bar is off and the little grab rail is in place instead.
yup crashed this time last year with a passenger she has a bruise on her ass fo 6 months from the pack rack

Ok, so obviously the driver behind is at fault... and that's one screwed bike.

However, to keep himself safe, he obviously wasn't looking beyond the vehicle in front of him, planning the behaviour of traffic and adjusting his riding to compensate. As it was, he didn't stop very short of the vehicle in front.

If he had seen the traffic ahead, he could have slowed down sooner, or changed lanes (I hate being stuck in a slow/stopped lane, when others around are clear).

Just goes to show, it doesn;t take much of an impact to smash a bike up.

After all the hoohah on another thread about Hi Viz vests, v headlights, I wonder if a vest would've helpt him be seen? The headlight wont have made any difference, but his brake light should have alerted the woman. Highlights how simple and quick, it is to have your pride and joy written off.

That makes me want to invest in a helmet camera...no insurance dispute possible with that sort of evidence!

Sometimes those soccer moms in their Remuera Tractors with tints make it really hard to see beyond them. I guess the answer then is to hang back a bit further but I guess you could also argue that lane splitting would have allowed the woman to plough into the car in front, rather than the biker

There are things he could have done yes, but you shouldn't NEED to do any of these things.
Don't want to be completely paranoid all the time.

I disagree... you do NEED to do them. As I say to newbies, it doesn't actually matter who is right or wrong. You can be 100% correct, but you'll still be the one in pain, in hospital or worse. It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you
