A trio of Yami's did the McKenzie loop yesterday, in what transpired to be record high temp's & then gale force winds - a real contrast to Brass Monkey. We covered BlackForest, runny icecreams in Kurow, Clarksfield Rd and Myers, Haka & McKenzie Passes.
It was bloody hot, to the extent the poor wee DT's temp warning light was on all day. Gullies were like sauna's and it was tempting to just ride the bikes into the Lake. Coming out the Haka the wind was nasty, blowing us each off the road at various times & snapping signs off at ground level.
Still way better than staying home to mow the lawns though.

Bigreddog (WR250R), Kev (XT660R) & my DT230, resting in Myers. Briefly joined by a guy on a DL1000 with bald road tyres who proved it's the rider more than the rubber.......

Nice stuff. Boy, they breed 'em tough down there in Caterbury...
When sheep were nervous...kind of tough.
I have a week in Invercargill next week, bikeless though. I am training at Edendale.
Looking forward to a break away from the heat...haha

Wow, either they make the sign posts out of weak wood down there or that was a lot stronger than your garden variety Gale Force winds.

Gale force winds in Wellington don't warrant much more than a passing mention and I've not seen posts broken like that here.

As an aside, on top of the Ruahine ranges there is a sign that says that it is the windiest place in NZ, it has a clear view of all four points of the compass....

The Mt John Observatory at Tekapo (McKenzie Country) claims the highest recorded wind gust in NZ - 250 km/hr on 18th April, 1970. No sign post could survive that!

T'was 29 oC at 9am here this morning... Rode for an hour or so yesterday with nothing under my leather jacket & ended up with chafed nipples & gloves full of sweat. Not complaining, it's an uncomfortable novelty. Must be cruel riding the hills in this heat.
