It is a aprilia Tuareg Wind 600....note the spelling

I loaded up the aprilia and took it to NV Motorcycles for a check up.
    Talk about a skilled mechanic.......
First thing noticed was the Dellorto had not been cleaned since 1988 or when the bike was first manufactured...
That might account for the trouble running on idle, the racing of the engine on choke and other things.
The throttle cable was perished, didn't expect that one....
One thing that may be a tad costly is the stator is buggered....
Apparently the bike starts first pop now, idles beautifully but just stops suddenly when warmed up.....
    The stator is definitely stuffed!
So.....can it be rewound? He seems to think so, so I am waiting on the news.
One thing about this bike. When all is done it is going to be a keeper.......It seems I am developing a sentimental love/hate relationship with it.
Perhaps it might be the bike to take south for the DB14 or maybe the DR800 might be the go as was the DR750, that performed so well under all of that stress....
I will keep all posted on the results....
Oh, it also road legal, wof as well........

Those engines were used in a lot of bikes, would the stator be unique to that bike or generic to the motor?

That is what we will try and find out. Pegaso, BMW etc might work, but the cheaper option might be a rewind? Nic will certainly do whatever is in my favour, that's why these guys are tops in my mind for the sensible approach and the wealth of knowledge he has.

Morrinsville rewinds could be worth a quote for a stator rewind, i think he quoted me 270 for the XR, was a while ago

Yes, I think he actually sent it across to Tauranga, seems he has a reliable known rewinder there.
Happy to say he thinks it is do-able. Anywhere from $180-300

A new one if it can be found would be over $600!
I also think that these may be inter-changeable, Pegaso, F650GS etc? But, hopefully don't have to down that track.

The aprilia has been serviced, new Warrant of Fitness. It needed a couple of bulbs to pass, so that isn't bad for an old girl!
The sidestand is too short, but it is factory. Because of the lean, it floods, so that is why it had problems running when cold. I now have it sitting on a piece of timber in the garage. I guess the problem would be solved when ridden
Fresh oil, new filter and the DeLorto carbie thoroughly cleaned out and serviced! The throttle cable has been replaced, she snaps back now rather than hang a bit in limbo.
A newly rewound stator to finish things off!

Now I have to rob a bank to pay for the work.
Well, not too bad after the work he has done.

aprilia is off the market, I am gonna keep her....after all of that work, she purrs like a kitten! but has a good throaty roar when threatened...

I'm itching for some riding, could be keen to go back up thompsons at some stage over summer. Maybe even have a look over the other side and see what it's like.

Wouldn't try the other side, too difficult. It has been tried in the past but there are some deep holes and lots of sharp objects in the holes...
The Wires track - Maratoto, wouldn't recommend that either unless you are enduro skilled. Lots of portage required in places, especially in the winter. Not to mention the off road fraternity in their 4 x 4's
