Good spares shop recommendation - CHCH/North Canterbury DR650

Hope this is in the right place to post this

Hey guys,

so today I managed to crash the DR whilst having some fun on the river. Worst damage is the right hand side engine cover (where the timing thingy is) and I think I'll need a new one. The bike is currently bleeding to death in my driveway

Would I have to go to a Suzuki dealer only, or would other independant type shops carry these parts? Either way, any of you have any recommendations? I'd like keenest price, but would gladly pay a bit more for decent service.

Any advice welcome.

ohh, any photos?

So is it too bad for a specialist welder to patch it up?

Guy at KG motorcycles done some case repairs on my DR when the gearbox tor itself apart.
For new cases I think you'll have to go to Suzuki if you cant fix or get second hand.

I'll get some photos up tomorrow when I take the part off and do a closer damage inspection.

Ive got a vid of the actual off, but no ones seeing that

(It was a test ride for my cam lol)

Looks like only a small crack but hopefully photos will tell.

No worries as I,m sure it can be welded and don,t forget good old e bay for second hand stuff......get the pics up and I,m sure some one will know somebody who can fix it......

If you can get the cover off, or drain all gas, unhook electrics and he may be able to do it in situ (makes the welding / cleaning easier if he can get to both sides though) - whip it in to Thorpe Engineering - Dalgety St, specialist aluminium welder, good blokes and easy to deal with - I was recomended him from a motorcycle hire mate and have found them great to deal with

Darryl at Advance motorhomes on Maces road is good with alloy stuff and does all the Bucket Guys alloy work. He has just done a Ducati engine sidecover.

I'm with others. Inspect and weld as first option, new part as second. Another welder is http://yellow.co.nz/companies/Welder...7627_1724.html

Welded a DR650 rim for me when it started to crack at the join. He did a fast turn around given I was off to the 2008 CCA about 3 days later.

Defininetly remove before welding and get both sides done. Gasket is cheap as chips and welded each side will be much better. Also welding a item when flat is going to give a much much better result than welding something that is vertical or upside down. Let alone the potential for damage to seals from heat.

Righto, so the resounding advice here is welding. I've uploaded a pic of the damage - still think it's weldable?

I've no problem with taking the bits off etc but I guess a new gasket will be suzuki shop time.

Yep.

They'll tell you when you take it in if they can't do it well.

Think it might be time to invest in a new bash plate to eh!

Yep and some crash bars if they make them?

Just while I think of it I have an engine guard on my DR, got left side one.

They only had the left side when I ordered mine but I'd like to get the right side sorted sometime now they do them too.
Them and a bash plate and she'd be pretty rock proof.
