I commute on a motorcycle, and apart from cars coming out of side streets looking like they are not even going to slow down is the U TURN.

I remember when there were signs down Queen Steet saying No U Turn.
Older cars had poor turning circles so the three point turn was more common. This was tought as part of you licence.

Now with cars having power steering and good steering locks motorists feel they can do a u turn anywhere.

- miss your turn....do a youie.
-outside the dairy by a pedestrian crossing just past a roundabout.....do a youie.
- At the traffic lights and your Tom Tom says " turn left 100 metres back"...do a youie.


And no Mr Katman ...you can't predict it as the if even the fecking drivers don't know what they are doing next.

Probably more of an Auckland issue as here you can get your licence from a fortune cookie.

ride around tauranga for a month, then you will not complain about the drivers where u live.

In saying that I still have no problems with other road users, I'm just used to the bad drivers and ride accordingly.

I do find myself agreeing with Katman frequently, and I have to laugh when bikers get all mad about people doin dumb shit in their vehicles.

Get used to it or let the hate consume you while you wait for the next unidentified hazard take you out.... rant over.

I dont think 3 pt turns is the answer, they start out like a u turn, which is the bit that roots you

Unfortunately IMO this problem is largely down to the inept road Police policy makers:

The Police claim to want to make the roads safer. Pedantically handing out $150 fines for something not relevant to the road safety of other road users, rather than to dangerous drivers failing to indicate appropriately or doing illegal U-turns is indicative of the “let’s go after the easy meat as it makes out stats look good with out us having to do any work” policy.

IMO – A key contributor to the one death a week stats for motorcycle deaths is the road policing policy makers. IMO - The general standards of road usage are far lower than they should be.

After all a crime is a crime, so let’s make ourselves look as good as possible and screw the safety of others.

Weekly revenue forecast meetings must be heaps of fun.

Not wholly the fault of Police Officers – they just do their jobs as directed.

I would rather go with the up skilling option.
There is always more I can do to keep myself safe. To say there isn't is to place my entire future in the hands of some invisible (possibly) unproven force that supposedly wants me to crash at some stage

Apparently incorrect indication at roundabouts is not on the driving test checklist. So someone can do it wrong during their test and still pass!

You can pass the test without even being tested - I didn't get past the warm up stage (10 minutes) and he passed me, for my full bike license.

Banning U turns is not the answer. You are obviously only looking at the issue from a city point of view. Imagine mising the turn in to Haast petrol station when heading north. You would have to go all the way to Fox Glacier before you could find a block to ride around, if you have the fuel to get there.

Even here in Central Otago, miss the turn off at Cromwell to go to Queenstown and you have to go all the way to Tarras.

There are already rules in place to make U-turns safe. Just enforce them rather than concentrate on speed for the tickets.

This morning I watched a big 4WD Toyota pull an illegal U right in front of a police car. Right across a solid line close to a pedestrian crossing. Did the policeman do anything. Not a chance
