It's a bus lane, and a cursory glance in the mirror would have told the driver there was no bus there, regardless of the fact motorbikes are allowed in it. Most drivers are probably pissed at all the bikes 'illegally' using them. At least he indicated, giving you a sporting chance. The biggest issue looks like your road placement.

What you think matters nothing. Do you want to stay alive? No matter how right you are, you will be a long time dead if you allow other road users to determine your safety on the road

    Thumbs up

Thanks for all the advice people - the practical advice is stuff that I normally do. As I say, I was distracted (not sure why - will have to pay more attention). I just wanted clarity on the legal position - especially about the crossing the bus lane to turn. its established that he should have moved into the lane first.

I just wanted to know if I was legally right - as I satrted seeing it from teh cars angle, and wondered if he thought he was right too (yes, I know, being legally right and dead is no help- look after yourself etc).
