Maori rights - Providing everyone is dealt with in an equal hand, irrespecitve of their ethnicity, I've no problem here.
Criminals - Scum. Apart from the 'safe' speeders.
PC people - Make me sick. Lazy, spineless and without the ability to discuss matters in a rational maner. Devoid of empathy.

Yipppeeee, someone with a positive mental attitude. Well done that man.

I was beginning to think this place was being taken over by poms with all the whinging going on!

I've lived in several countries over the years, and NZ is by far the best. You have a liberal govt that refuses to dictate to the public as the US, UK and other nations govts do. You have (despite the negativity in this thread) a great positive outlook on life, other people and the world around you. You're generaly law abiding, friendly and respectful. And to top it all off the scenery if some of the best, if not the best, to be found anywhere in the world. This is why so may bloody foreigners want to come and live here (me being one).

God bless NZ. It's a brilliant place.

    And I like the beer.

I for one am glad there's an election coming up. I do have some doubts as to whether it'll make much of a difference but I think the best result would be to have an absolute hodge podge of parties (give them all 5 seats) so nothing gets through. At least it'd stop them mucking more things up! No, the present govt are not responsible for all this countrys ill's (or its fortune) but Mp's with special interest groups (usually after some form of financial benefit) pushing very hard in the background tend to root things up for the greater majority at regular intervals

    Their just about ALL nice.
Last night I was at Kaikohe an got my truck stuck out behind Te Iringa, the three guys that stopped to give me a hand an then went out of their way to go find a tractor to get me out were Maori guys.
Last week I got a flat tyre half way through the Russel state forest.
The two guys that stopped an helped me crack the wheel nuts, then drove to the local Marae to get some planks of wood to stop my jack sinking into the dirt road were both Maori guys.
Both these things happened right on dark an if these blokes hadn't stopped I'll of spent the night there.
Couple of months back I was out at Te Kaha delivering a tank when I realised
I wouldn't get back to Opotiki before I ran out of legal driving time,I was planning on camping at a local beach, but when I asked a local Maori guy where a good spot would be,he insisted I stay at his place for the night.
These are just a few of the things I can recall right now,but there typical of how I get treated by the Maori folks I come across.
Sure I've been called a bloody Honky by some arsehole, but that was just him an he'll pay for it in the long run with the life he lives.
    What goes round.
Can't help it. Most of the Maori's in Napier aren't as friendly as most. Not my fault I live here. And those are small towns where 90% of the population are Maori and the rest may as well be Maori (no offence meant) Just depends on where you live and what you do. I'm a student, not a truckdriver like you (I'm just guessing from the legal driving hours thing) so I get all the 'gangsters' at school who have no respect for anyone who isn't Maori. You may have seen on the TV earlier this year about a school in Napier who had gang troubles (also the 'broomstick' school), well that's where I go to.

I think that like all people you cannot judge the enire population by the few that you meet and don't happen to be very nice. But i do agree that in the teenage social world is has become more noticeable that 'hoodies' are becoming more and more arrogant. For instance, im in the 6th form at an all boys school. i'm walking along with a few of my mates and this little 4th form punk walks straight into us, telling us to get the f*ck outta his way. What happened to common courtesy and respect for other people? these little shitbags need to be brought back in line, as we have now been instructed to do so by senior management. About bloody time because people are getting fed up with their attitudes.
Was he Maori? If so I thought they were supposed to respect their elders. Being it older people around them, grandparents, parents etc etc

While I have no idea what you go through on a day to day basis mate, all I can say, without meaning to be condescending, is be careful not to attribute your experiences with your school colleagues and neighbours simply to the fact that they are Maori. It's probably more a social-economic thing. Coming from the UK I've experienced school gangs, neighbourhood gangs and such like and it had fk all to do with their ethnicity. It was because different groups of people, mostly from certain parts of town and/or from different social (financial) backgrounds get together and decide to hate everyone else that is different. That's human nature I'm afraid.

But there is a natural instinct to 'stick with your own'. So in this case the Maori guys sound like they stick together because they are Maori, it doesn’t mean they act the way they do because they are Maori.

I'd probably start sounding like Zed if I said you should count your fucking blessings. Stop bitching and DO something about it if you think the place needs improving.

There's scores of community groups that need help for starters.
I would if I could but...I'M 14. And nobody would listen to one single person or a whole lot of 14 year olds anyway. Whatever we TRY to do won't do much as this government sucks! It doesn't work like it used to anymore. From hearing about the 60's, 70's and 80's from my folks and their friends I start to think, where the fuck has my freedom gone. And why can't we do those things anymore. And I also hear they are raising the age when you can sit your learners cage and bike license from 15 to 18. That means my mother or father has to transport me everywhere I go with my fucking drum-kit until I'm old enough to drink, vote and do whatever else this government will let me do. All this shit about speed kills. It's not speeding that does it. It's the fuckers who drive down the highway at 80kms and don't pull over and hold up traffic. You try *555 and they tell you they are quite within their rights to drive at that speed. It's bullshit. I try to stand up for myself but it never works. Nobody listens etc etc.

Yes NZ has great natural beauty and a lot of wonderful people live here but when I started this thread I wasn't talking about natural beauty. I was talking about the government and stupid laws preventing my generation and all the generations after mine to do the stuff that the older generation did when they were my age. I would get arrested for doing stuff that my parents and uncles and aunties did when they were my age. STUPID GOVERNMENTS.

OSH, ACC and LTSA can be brought into this as they have had a lot to do with the crap that goes on in this country. My parents would go and play in construction sites when they were young. I would get in shit for doing that now. My dad used to go hunting and then camp on the side of the road in giant drain pipes. I would get in shit for doing that now.

I also can't get a job at a lot of places because you have to be 15 or some shit. RUBBISH! If you can prove you are a responsible 13, 14 year old then you should be able to work there. I can't get a taste of what it's like to be in the real world because of so many laws stopping me from having freedom, getting a job, allowing me to try things and so on.

The younger generation is going to be running this country soon and the older ones are leaving it in a right mess for us.

And not all Maori people are assholes but most of the assholes I come across are Maori.

    I am finished.

Name a democratic country in the world where people don't slag off their government and laws. Do you really think it is better elsewhere? Criticising government, politicians, and laws as a general statement is easy but needs to be backed up with specifics.

Of course Parliment does some odd things - gay marriage for example, but the MPs are only human. They try to do the best they can with what they believe. Don't forget, while you and I are shaking our heads, there are other people going "Yeah, and lets have more social engineering".

NZ is a liberal open democracy. We enjoy freedoms that other societies dream of. Eg. in China this topic, indeed this forum would be closed down by the State. At the moment NZ Cricket are faced with a compulsory tour of Zimbabwe. An easy answer would be for our Government to ban the tour - but they won't. Why? Because that would constitute state control of freedom to travel. But in the USA, you cannot travel directly to Cuba. So who has the greater freedom???

Has to be said that young folk nowadays have a whole load of shit laid on them, and are controlled and nannyed to a degree that would have been regarded as ludicrous when I was young.

Not allowed to play on construction sites ? What a load of cobblers. Construction sites were our motocross sites ! No-one cared, we never damaged anything. Local cop used to stop by every so often if we racing round one, have a look at what we were doing , tell us not to mess about with anything , and drive off.

I'd hate to by a young guy nowdays,I reckon they're taken all the fun out of it.

Well said. I knew that was what you were trying to say all along - it's not easy finding the right words to get a point across esp. at your age. BTW it's ARSEholes. Just in case Hitcher drops by - he gets upset, you know.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Either a case of selective memory, or you're a lot younger than I'd assumed...

There were lots of good things about growing up back then, but as for freedom, choices and social status the young today are streets ahead.

Not only were we not expected to have our own opinions at the age of 14, but if (shock, horror) we were presumptuous enough to attempt to express them openly, and they were at all critical of the way things were, a quick clip over the ear or a sarcastic comment would soon put us in our place. Respect your elders and betters... And they meant it.

It at least had the advantage that we spent most of our time listening and watching and thinking, so that by the time we got round to expressing our views there was a certain substance to them...

Ah, I was too busy having fun to worry about such serious matters at that age. Quite happy to leave it to my elders and betters.

I loathe this PC nanny state we live in. On the radio and TV they play ads telling me I could slip in the shower of fall down the stairs in my home...THANKS FOR THE TIP.........DOSS CUNT

Today the government said that paying for the ICC bill is out of the question (which it is to some degree) and is a waste of tax payers money.......but it's NOT a waste of money paying $500 mil on some shit protical. They try to tell us it's a good thing! - Yeah Right

I like some of Winnie's idea's on Maori issues, it just gone too far.

I can't help but think of this country's PCness when I listen to "this is England" (by the Clash )

Maybe I just listen to NEWSTALK ZB too much, I like Danny Watson and Leighton Smith
