Respect your elders and betters... And they meant it.

It at least had the advantage that we spent most of our time listening and watching and thinking, so that by the time we got round to expressing our views there was a certain substance to them...
We had the most important freedom of all - the expectation that we would be kids with all that entails. I'm glad I grew up in the 60/70's. Nothing wrong with having a healthy respect for our elders etc instilled - made for a healthier society all round.

Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Just to cover one point - I think we are the only Pakeha family in our town, certainly looks that way if I look outside....I have never had a problem with ''Maori'',and hope I never do,nothing they've ever done to make me look down on them, but I hate toe rags of any race....

This stuff is not new, just more common - and I'm not happy with what's going on out there.Let's go back a few years........

I went to school at 5yrs old and met some other 5 yr olds who became my best friends for the rest of my school days, still sitting in the same class at 16.By then we had found cars and beer,we were a bit under the influence of an older brother of one of my class mates - by the time he was 21 he had spent 4 yrs 9 mths inside for various offences. So we would drive around in a 58 Ford V8 drinking beer - we would stop and someone would say ''fuckin sports car!'' then they would all get out and trash an MGB,kicking in the doors and lights, pile in the Goldflash and look for the next bit of fun - two guys walking along an inner city back street - ''what the fuck you lookin at cunt?'' next thing they are all out of the car beating the shit out of these guys. And then one of them would cruise suburban streets at night in a V8,with a team of young kids as young as 10 running up driveways and stealing stuff from cars. This was back in 1969/70....this was not modern NZ.

I discovered my friends were people I now didn't want to be around,I didn't want to go to jail just for sitting in their car - it was a tough desicion, but I had to abandon my childhood mates, guys who had stepped in an protected me from bullies, helped me in sports and taken the blame and punishment for deeds I had done,no questions asked....I had to find a new life and friends, motorcycles gave me that.

But I have kept in sporatic touch with some of my school mates and have heard how life has treated them. The one who's brother was the ''bad'' boy later went back to school and university, got an engineering degree, owned his own tuna boat and now lives in semi retirement on the Goldcoast dabbling in the share market, his younger brother also went back to school, university and is now a successful property developer.Another lives in a drug and boose haze with a life history of violence....and that's a shame because he was my closest friend in high school and was very inteligent,a total waste.

This stuff has been brewing a long time,it's just that there are more people around.

What are your thoughts about it all. I personally think Helen Clarke is to blame for most of it but that's just me.

Mrs MSTRS says that it is obvious that her 'little' boy knows which side his bread is buttered. Damn - means he'll get the nicest steak tonight!!

Didn't we all think the oldies were fucking things up when we were teenagers?
Things are clear when you're young, it gets very murky as you age. (cataracts?)
But I do think we had healthier lives as kids in the 60's. The way pre-pubescents are sexualised today is quite disgusting, and all in the name of making a buck.
It'll be interesting seeing what it's like in 20 or 30 years. (he says hopefully).
Will it be total permissiveness or a return to Victorian repression?
The Yanks are trying for the latter.
