I dont know if this has already been posted, i couldnt find it on a search.

The laws have recently changed about who can get access to your vehicle details, and what is openly displayed to the public. No longer can anyone just go pay $10 with your rego number and find out all about it. If you would like your details kept private you can go to the LTSA from this link:

and have your vehicle details removed. People can still apply to the police to get your details, but they need a very good reason to do so.
It doesnt cost anything, just need rego and licence number
please read the link carefully, as opting out does make it harder to be notified of traffic tickets etc

Yep, been posted here before and no one seemed to care too much. I have opted out and it really is as easy as you say!

It would be nice if you were correct but sadly you are wrong.

You will always be notified of traffic tickets as police, councils, justice etc have full access regardless of your opt out settings.

But so do Wilson Parking, Insurance companies, Finance Companies, and the General Public.

NZTA have opted out of the opt out.

The fee is now $15 but they almost always provide the details.

Thanks for those links, interesting read. Im not suprised that debt collectors, finance conpanys, car dealers etc can get exemtions,wilson parking to give you a ticket. they would be a large part of the 97% approval. hopefully the 3% that are being rejected are the dodgey buggas trying to find where your pride and joy sleeps for a steal to order.
While the opt out appears to not be working as we were lead to think, is it still better to be opted out then not?

The "opt out" works BOTH ways ... There may/WILL be times you want to find the arsehole that ran you off the road ... pinched ya bike ... etc etc etc ....

The entire purpose of the opt out was to give people a tool to allow them to dodge vigilante justice.

Sadly good old kiwi apathy has allowed it to be lost.

That is a shame if they are giving out info for vigilante justice. Or because they made up a story, they need to investigate requests, but i guess that would take time and effort.
I have no problem if someone applys for my details for a genuine reason -hit n run, that guy i ran off the road yesterday, etc etc- I was hopeful it may protect my vehicles and property from "steal to order" thieves. I have had my car stalked before,around 6 years ago i was followed for quite sometime in my v8, buy a car load of thugs, taking pics of the back of the car. Maybe they just liked the car, maybe they wanted to steal it later, anyways, we changed the registered address for THAT car on the monday, to my partners work address, and that worked for a few years, then a few years ago we noticed the details had changed back to our home address, and we could not link it to the work address anymore. I would hate it if someone got the rego of my v8, thinking i must be rich cause i paid someone to make it look as good as it does ( the reality is im not rich, i just put 1000s of hours into that car) and then got my address, thinking there were heaps of rich guy stuff here to steal, they just nicking stuff anyway cause they went to the trouble of breaking in.
ive had two cars nicked (daily drives), one daily drive broken into, and two attemps on houses ive lived in, im quite paranoid about people nicking my shit these days.

I just hope they are keeping opt out detail away frow these thieves

They dont give your details out to thieves. When you apply to get somebodys details they ask you if you are a thief. If you say "yes", they dont give them to you.

The address you use must be in post office approved format. So if you cant find it on the post code finder page, you cant licence a vehicle to the address.

Generally business premises won't come up, only residential ones.
