Its always a good ride when you come home in one piece.
There should be a long thin wire that comes out of the unit, the end of which is just wrapped around your spark plug lead several times and the cable tied up to stop it coming off. May have unravelled, so just pull the tank off and have a nosy.
Yeah the way they work is that a coil you wrap around the spark plug lead has a pulse generated into it everytime the sparkplug fires. That pulse makes the meter run. So you may also have a broken wire or the wire Isn't pushed in hard enough in the back hour meter.
or if its a moto minder one, you will need to have the black wire earthed (attached to the frame etc with a bolt
cheers for the help guys will have a nosey

wrapped the black wire(Only one wire) around spark plug cord. Cable tied it there. went for a 10minute ride didnt read anything. Any other ideas before I go buy a new one?

GET MARRIED ... your (new) mrs will tell you exactly (down to the minute) how long your ride was ...![]()

Think your bike has direct ignition with noise suppression so a normal meter will not work.
Either of these should do the trick:

Connect the Black wire to the strap, and the Red wire to the little hand of your watch.
Lol another note
would it matter if there is insulation tape around spark plug lead?

Shouldn't...... The wire around the sparkplug from the hourmeter is simply picking up the spark / impulse to generate a recording on the hourmeter.
Use Google to research your hour meter and there may be a means of testing it for operation.
PS. your photo last week was impressive, keep it up!
